Actually, sheet to tiller will sail really well downwind on a deep broad reach. You switch to the jib sheet. There is yet another version that uses a small (really small) controlling sail set up about where a staysail would be, and the sheet to it is what powers the thing. That version is probably best left to boats bigger than ours and for really long jaunts. Both work on the notion that the jib sheet will go slack when the jib is blanketed by the main and will tension up hard when the boat points up enough the jib comes out to play. It finds a balance between the two and stays there. h (who just yesterday salvaged both a peck and a half peck basket from the trash.......what were they thinking?) Bones. You don't need to read anything about simple sheet to tiller steering. You see, it's simple. Now if you don't understand the basics or you just like to read about several self steering systems. that's another thing. I put it on the factory Fin keeled 17 that was arguably less directionally stable then the more common keel/centerboarder. one piece of bungee(or surgical tube) one line and 1 block. is all that's needed for experimenting and tuning and playing and having fun. I sailed for about 1/4 of a mile and that's all the time for learning curve, head scratching adjusting and understanding what was going on. The system won't go down wind, but others will. chop and or light air makes it grumpy, and it won't go all the way hard on the wind but in smooth water steady breeze it's close. When you get the setup figured out, you can make or improve the parts for easier adjustment for different wind velocities and angle. 1st day keep it dumb and simple. Remember to under trim the main a bit, like a bit of a bubble in the luff. This is key. After that 1/4 mile of adjustments I took a nap and awoke to Simon's need for a BM. There my have been beer aboard, I don't remember. If there's questions ask away.Borrego, Paintboy, and a dozen other aliases to keep the NSA guessing

Jerry, Connie,
Thank you for your gifted insight. 1/4 inch it is for the tubing.
