yes what Gary says. a long trailer will pull nice (and easier to back up) than a short trailer. if a trailer is 'wagging' my first guess there is a weight distribution issue and the tongue weight is to light. another issue that can come up is if the tow vehicle is light ... like the weight of the trailer/boat is more the 1/2 the car/truck. the boat/trailer can begin to 'wag the dog'. if the tow vehicle as a very short wheelbase you can sometimes get more 'wagging' ... such as using Jeep Wrangler (one of the 'standard' models, not the 4-door). it can also be a challenge to back a trailer with a vehicle with a very short wheelbase. in addition to the above be sure you have read up on and are following your vehicle's GVW, GVWR, RGAW, RGAWR, GCWR, etc., etc. towing restrictions. my experience is the Pacific's pull great ... right behind with no issues. November of 2011 coming back from San Francisco on I-80 the wind was blowing so hard the interstate was slowed down to 35MPH from Green River, WY, to Laramie, WY. boat/trailer followed with no problem. once i turned south on I-25 the highway speed went back up; but the wind was still BLOWING 50MPH+. the trailer and boat had no bad behaviors ... the truck with the camper rocked some (not the trailer/boat rocking the truck). :: Dave Scobie --- On Tue, 3/26/13, GARY M HYDE <gmhyde1@mac.com> wrote:
Actually the sway is less with the long tongue because the car has better leverage on the trailer.

My concern would be that the pivot point (ball hitch) is an increased distance from the weight (boat) any sway would be greater than normal ("Give me a lever long enough and I can move the earth") and could cause the auto to be affected.

I am considering to just tow my M17 with the extension out on the trailer. The extension on my Pacific trail is not all that long, while extended there is about 4-5 feet of overlap with two pins holding it.
I tow it about 15 miles back and forth to the lake, no
highway but speeds up
to 55mph. I know there are ways to set it up to easily extended it without taking it off the hitch but I have not gotten around to that yet.
Does anyone think this would be unsafe or not
recommended for some reason?
