Just to add to this hatchboard discussion, I made new hatchboards for my M17 out of starboard and they look great. I also added a rectangular stainless steel vent in the top board. No maintenance! I made them in three pieces with the the bottom edge of the middle and top hatchboards angled down to reflect incoming rain. If anyone is interested I can send some pics.
