Connie, I am with you and have a downhaul for my jib which runs to the housetop along with all the rest of my lines. I also have had problems with roller furling jibs so, have stayed with hank on sails. Keeping tension on the jib downhaul and one jib sheet will keep the jib under control on the foredeck until it is safe to go forward. Even when trailering, I set everything up at dockside (including feeding the sail slugs) or on the trailer, before setting out to avoid having to leave the safety of the cockpit if things get nasty. I even wear my PFD with a harness built in and have a tether line to put on if it really gets dicey. As I get older I get more risk adverse or maybe I am just getting some common sense.
