OK all you cold country sailors...We GET THE MESSAGE!! you know the "Stop bragging about all your winter Arinzona sailing" message. So will you PLEASE take your cold air back up there where it belongs!!!! We just spent last weekend at the Arizona Yacht Club's B-day Regatta in Phoenix, AZ. Over 90 boats participated and we had a great time....BUT, we were staying on the boat and you guys sent down the COOOOOOLD. Overnight lows were record breaking 25 degrees! Now I know you guys are laughing about what whimps we are ...but c'mon! We're not used to that! Up till the day befoer the regatta overnight lows were the normal 40-50 degrees. Kudos to my wife Jo who stuck out the weekend with me. We were able to get the inside of the Monty up to around 60-65 with our ZODI heater (which we now are absolutely in love with). We used the Zodi all night long along with a CO monitor just to be on the safe side. The Zodi recirculates cabin air through a heat exchanger that is over a propane burner outside of the cabin. The cabin air never mixes with the air involved in the combustion process. YOU STILL MUST BE VERY CAREFUL THOUGH, of course. One night the wind turned around and blew over the transom into the cockpit and apparently pushed the exhaust from the burner (which was in the cockpit) up against the hatch boards. The CO monitor went into alarm. After shutting down the burner and flushing the cabin with fresh COLD air, I turned the boat around and fired her up again. Never had another problem. Just goes to show though that you have to be VERY careful. We were very conscious of and paid attention for any signs of CO poisoning. Neither of us suffered any symptoms of CO poisoning (headache, nausea, etc.) but had we not had the CO monitor ($15 at Ace) might have been a different story. Still bundled up down here! Top news stories are all the busting frozen pipes in all the communities. We don't insulate them down here cause it "never" freezes. hahaha famous last words! Great sailing though and we had a great time. If you ever get the Jan itch to sail, the AYC in Phoenix puts on a great event. Boats came from as far away as Missisipi and Canada! Plan on coming down next year! And, as an added bonus...We got to meet, hang out, and sail with Jerry Montgomery himself. A true gentleman. He was sailing with my friend Gary O. who finally got to put all the work he's done to his 17 (it's name is LB/GF, I'll let Gary tell you what it means!) to work. Over the next few days I'll get our pics together and put them up on the Havasumontogmerys.funtigo.com website. On another note, I saw a post on the Trailersailor forum from Todd Mills. He's having some computer probs and can't get into the MSOG right now until he fixes the problem, but he's got some exciting news to share when he gets back online! Freezing in AZ!!! SEND WARM AIR!!!! Sean and Jo M23 Dauntless
