i have the same problem with our trailer. we now use a hitch extender that gives us another 18 inches. it isn't long but it's enough. also we still have full control over the trailer in case (this is the only thing that i don't like about rope method). here is the link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007M1FNM well worth the money and has made things much easier.
