I'm not sure a backstay tensioner on a mast head rig such as the M17 would do anything more than simply tighten the forestay. Would over tightening the shruods cause the mast to bend ? On a fractional rig as the M15 I can see how it might bend the mast. Any body have a explanation? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brian Gilbert" <hammerguy@mindspring.com> To: <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, May 26, 2006 9:36 AM Subject: M_Boats: Re:Mast Bend
That's correct... with the standing rig slack, she has a slight bend aft. It's not a kink or hard spot, but the mast above and below the spreaders is slightly straighter.
It's no more bend than would normally be added by a backstay tensioner, but still... I'd prefer the mast to be straight in column. I'm not a racer, as is immediately obvious to anyone who sees me on a sailboat... I'm more the trail-your-arm-in-the-water-while-daydreaming type.
Thanks BG

So the mast is bent without benefit of tension in the standing rigging? No rigger here, but don't think that's right... t
