Tom, Tony, All, apparently there is quite a difference in mainsheet location on the older vs. newer M17 models. We've built dozens without an issue until I saw the messages on this list indicating. Tom, you don't need to saw anything off your tiller, simply give me a call and we'll build a new tiller to your desired length, in order to clear the mainsheet. Just measure from the butt end of the tiller you have on your new rudder to the length you would prefer and we'll send you the size you require. I would encourage owners to contact us with tiller length issues, rather than cutting off a tiller, we can easily build what you need, once we're aware that there is a length problem, give us a chance to make your life easier and exhibit good service to you. Not sure what year Montgomery moved the mainsheet aft, I will be talking with Bob E. sometime this week about a couple rudders for new builds and I'll ask him if he has info about that. Rest assured that we want to provide a drop-in, sail-away assembly and getting the tiller length right is part of that equation. I appreciate the feedback of our customers and info from this group to help us deliver better service to Montgomery owners. Any ideas, conjecture or theories about the mainsheet placement on various model year boats are welcome. Our rudder worksheet <http://www.idasailor.com/worksheets/transom_worksheet.html> asks for tiller length and we generally ask new customers to fill this worksheet out when booking a new order so that we can build the rudder assembly to fit a boat exactly. We'll make sure that we reiterate the tiller length requirement more stridently when booking future M17 Unifoil rudder orders. I did not try my IdaSailor rudder (2007 vintage) until yesterday, and I too discovered that the 48" tiller reaches 3" past the mainsheet. I have not tried it on the water, but I assume I would have to steer with the tiller raised, and raise it up to the boom for tacking. I can shorten the base about 2" without making a hokey setup, but that is not enough. I would be interested to know why the tiller is so much longer than it is on the stock rudder, and how you folks have solved the problem. I certainly don't want to cut off the nice knob on the fore end.

Maybe because the main sheet was further forward in the older M17's? The older ones like my 1976 have the traveler right behind the bridgedeck.

We cut off 3 inches on the aft end. Re-drill the 1/4 inch holes. Not a problem.
