The first ten or fiffteen 17's were a 550 lb cast iron fixed keel, similar to a Cal 20 keel. They were very stiff but would hobby horse going to weather in a good chop, much like a Cal 20. The fixed keels made in the 90's were glass; an extension of the regular 12" fixed keel. Seems like the total depth (not draft) of the keel was 21". A good boat but I've never raced one so can't tell how fast it was. I sailed on one a couple of times and it felt good. Same amounty of ballast as the keel/CB model, but the weight was centered lower. Best of worlds except for launching draft. That's how I remember the history. The 17 started out with a fixed keel.
So how did a fixed keel get on a 1992 boat?
Wonder if it's the same cast iron keel?
