I went with the Snapfurl over the CDI because of the relative ease of changing out sails. I sold my 150 and 135 genoas and had a new 150 made, with a foam luff. I also had my 110 converted for RF, as well as a heavy weather sail I had from my other boat that makes a good storm sail for the M17. I did two things that make changing sails as easy or easier than changing hank-on sails: 1. I added a pre-feeder on a short lanyard to the tack fitting. 2. I took the jib halyard leading to the cockpit out of the deck organizer and installed a swivel block instead. That way I can lead the halyard tail forward to work at the furler and then back aft to the cockpit when finished. I do not change sails when under way, just at the dock before setting out. The problem with doing it under way, especially when single handed, is that the lowered sail is unrestrained by hanks and can be a handful to gather in. The 150 is my primary sail and is used in most conditions. If the weather looks like it is going to be too heavy for the reefed 150 I will swap it out for one of the smaller sails. I really like the roller furling/reefing. I didn't know what I was missing before I got it. As John mentioned in a previous post it gives me infinite and instant adjustment of sail size for changing conditions, up to a point. And with the Shaefer Snapfurl I can change to a smaller sail instead of trying to reef the 150 down to a 70 or less. Schaefer snapfurl CF500. Excellent unit for the M17.
Have a new genoa made! Recuttioa hank-on sail dosen't work well - makes for poor sail shape and even worse when reefed.
I recommend you talk with Harry at E/P Sailmakers. Get a foam luff.

Hi.
I am thinking about installing a jib furl on my Montgomery 17. I had a local rigger look at the boat this morning and he says the boat is too heavy for the "Harken Small Boat" and he is unsure which furl is best suited for this boat. He is going to do some research but I thought I would put it out to you all as well. The head sail is a genoa 150% Also, is it reasonable to expect the furl to be able to reef?
Thanks,
