Thanks, Robbin. (My name's Steven.) I've studied up on the blister repair and in fact have all the supplies, so I'm not really going to be able to talk myself out of getting started on the job. Obviously, I can proceed as time permits (though there's another Minnesota winter sitting on the other side of the sailing season, and I don't have a heated garage, so I can't tarry too long.) West System has quite a bit of literature on repairs, and I'm comfortable with using their products. I built the WoodenBoat Nutshell sailing pram using West epoxy, many years ago (a good little sailor, still going, likes lots of wind, turns a lot of heads). I'll probably use a few small blisters as my guinea pigs, before opening up the larger ones. I'm sure it'll be a project. There's a brand of gelcoat carried by West Marine -- I think it's Evercoat -- and if I remember correctly, the label says that it can't be put over epoxy. West Marine's own brand doesn't say that (I don't think), but I'm trying to find out what that's about. I had assumed I could fill any voids with a thickened epoxy and then finish the patch off with a layer of color-matched gelcoat -- but now I'm not sure if that'll work. And it might be more trouble than it's worth. I mentioned that I'd like not to go to a bottom paint -- but that's in part because I think it spoils part of the beautiful sheer of the lapstrake molding design. However, Interlux has some Fiberglass Bottomkote in a gray-white tint, which wouldn't be as obtrusive. And if I knew I was going to go ahead and use the paint, the blister repairs could just proceed more quickly as fill-and-sand areas that could just be faired out and prepped for painting. I may have talked myself into that even as I typed it out. I do know that a big part of the problem was likely the closed, super-hot and -humid cabin. I did put a low-profile vent in the foredeck soon after I bought the boat, but of course you have to pull that out and cover it when you're going to be gone. Something about driving rainstorms and nesting yellowjackets. If anyone knows the answer to whether you can apply gelcoat over an epoxy patch, please post. Thanks.
