I built a Bolger Nymph 8 footer. Lots of fun and rows well; haven't added the sailing rig (yet). ~~~_/)~~~Gary Hyde 2005 M17 #637 sailboat 'Hydeaway 2' On Mar 24, 2011, at 7:11 PM, GILASAILR@aol.com wrote:

if they can be made cheaply enough....
probably the answer right there.
What is the real demand for 12 foot open sailing boats?
Many are available to be built in kit form by ham fisted/ finger cutting/ wood butchers like myself. Pride of construction there.
Then there is also that issue called 'freight'.
How many on the list have/are/plan on building their own small (or large) boat?
There is SO much variety available, so inexpensively and easily well built by amateurs today. It is a tough market and the margins (even builder/direct sales) are small.
I don't think I EVER made money in 30 some years selling new 'small' boats at the retail level. 'Small' being 13 feet and shorter in this case. I once sold 11 M-10 s and got to keep the 12th for myself! WOW!
Wondering what others think?
GO - former marine industry worker I never lost a million, but I was Zero$ broke twice - overall made a good+ living for my family, but not based on new sales. Money was in resale, repair and storage.
