Tom: Actually, my electric is a trolling motor, about 15 years old I think. --Gary On Nov 12, 2007, at 8:21 AM, Tom Jenkins wrote:
Gary, I know one can store more energy per unit volume in a gas can, but I suspect that electric motor technologies have improved dramatically with all the millions spent researching batteries and propulsion. Additionally, Europeans are banning gas engines on many popular waters, so necessity might be the "mother of invention". If your electric is in fact one of the new breed, and not a trolling motor type of rig, that is indeed a cautionary tale for the rest of us. Thanks for your comments.

The 2 hp Honda 4-stroke only weighs 28 lb and would get you a lot further. An electric would be ok for just getting away from the dock. I have an electric I'm not using. It would push my Quartermaster 10 (weighs about 135 lb) only a couple of miles on a fully-charged 80 amp-hour car battery.

Hello All,
I am wondering if anyone has considered the Torqeedo electric outboard for a Montgomery 15 or 17. I saw them in a West Marine catalog and studied the factory website in some detail (www.torqeedo.com); they appear promising unless one needs to motor for miles in dead calm. With the integral rechargeable battery, they should push the 17 a couple of miles at 3 or 4 knots, and with an extra 24 volt battery (or the onboard bank if you have two that can be rigged in series) you would get maybe 10 or 12 miles. The 25 lb weight and folding feature, plus the possibility for eliminating gasoline and noise onboard, are enticing.
