M_Boats: Oar Leathers

Here's a question I've not seen posted before. How, exactly, do you install the buttons on oar leathers? I've only seen one oar with leathers on it, and they laced the leather on, then wrapped the button around the top end and nailed it down. It didn't look right to me, but maybe that's how it's done.
