I lifted up some papers, and there was Michael Mann's book, "A LITTLE BREEZE TO THE WEST". Michael sailed his M15 from Huntington Beach, CA ; departing on June 11th, 1982. He arrived at Haleiwa 38 days later. He spent almost a year in Hawaii, where he met cadets from a ship of the California Maritime Academy. That encounter led to his selling LITTLE BREEZE , returning to California and then spending four years at the Maritime Academy, where he obtained his US Coast Guard Third Mate's License. Jazz,
There was a guy back in the mid 2000's that had Bob build him a special modified M-17. He wanted to sail to Africa, I believe? His name was Willie? I read some various stories/posts about his trip/adventure on this site. The most recent was about someone auctioning off his boat for payment of long term storage fees. I believe this all happened in New Zealand? If someone is remembering this differently, please chime in and correct my memory.

Ya, I have the book in the 15, but I thought someone went farther in a 17? Maybe I'm losing it.. It's so interesting, I'd love a hawaii run. Jazz On Aug 22, 2016 9:43 PM, "Bill Ahrens" <billahrens@comcast.net> wrote:
What happened to the guy that had the modified 17, Mark Hightower? That brought his boat to San Carlos about 30 years ago?

He did write a book about it; I think SCA sells it. he came to the Wrinkle Boat regatta in Jan. He went to the Maritime Academy BEFORE sailing to HI, and was second in command but probably retired now; it was imminent.

Hi Jazz,
He left from San Diego and sailed to Hawaii in an M15. As soon as I can dig through my pile of debris on my desk I'll provide name; dates of voyage; and what happened.
He wrote a great book about his trip; and when he returned to the USA, he went to the Mariner's Academy in California, and today is a Captain of large ships traveling the high seas.
