That's pretty much it, Bill. keep it flat and your fore/aft weight placement is important. Obviously, you need a vang and tiller extension. jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Kaiser" <whkaiser@gmail.com> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Monday, June 29, 2009 8:56 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: New to me M7-11
Jerry, Thanks for jumping in. I grew up sailing Thistles and a Flying Ducthman planing was always cool. I had no idea that I could get the M10 on a plane. I have sailed the boat about 5 times now and learning the boat. One thing I noticed was as the wind comes up the sailor can move back towards the stern more comfortable seating yet the boat still goes to wind a good thing I have to beat out to the middle of the lake. So for planing I am guessing start with a broad reach as the puff hits move back pull in on the main and head up just little and level the boat. Is that the formula?
Thanks, Bill

Bill- the 10 will plane in conditions like that; when you see a puff coming, hike hard and roll back a bit to keep the bow from going under.

I happened on an M10 here in Phoenix had to refarnish the rub rails the
rudder and center board were in good shape. Had to re sheet the boat has oar locks the oars are 6ft way to short: fun boat last time out was white caps had to be quick on the main sheet release in the puffs to keep it up right; exciting. White water splashing over the bow. Keep you on your toes wearing a life jacket because no one is on the lake to help you if you dump it.

Lucky.? I hope to get to see one in person one day.? They sound like great day boats.?
Had my wife single hand the other day and she did great. ( I worked on the trailer)? Came by the dock and picked me up.? Never stopped moving just slacked the main to slow down, I stepped on, and she sheeted in and kept going. ? She was all smiles.? Never started the motor once all day.

Happened to stop at a garage sale in Lincoln City on the Oregon Coast and saw a lapstrake dingy leaned against a storage shed. Asked about it and ended up taking it home with me. Hull number 60, built 02/74. The hull looks good. It had red bottom paint to the waterline at some point, though it has mostly worn off. The centerboard is in great shape, the rudder has a chunk out of it, but fixable I think. Has two sails. The original is limp, but the other still has some life left in it. The mast and boom are clean and not bveat up. No oars though it has oarlocks. The teak rub rails and seats were coated, badly, with varnish, so that will have to come off. All-in-all a good find I think I needed another project.
