I own a 1983 Montgomery 15. Last summer was my first time using the boat due to the pandemic and some other health issues but I did manage to launch and keep at a dock on Lake Pymatuning (OH/PA border) from August to September. Apparently the boat was always dry sailed, and never had anti fouling paint applied as the bottom was clean when I bought it almost three years ago. When I hauled it out (dumb me) there was algae on the bottom. I was able to get it pretty clean using a marine algae cleaner and powerwasher but I'll give it another hit in the spring. As I was powerwashing, I seem to have removed a 3" section of fiberglass from the fin keel, forward on the port side. Looks like exposed metal. Is this lead or steel? Can't see well in there. How should it be fixed/patched? I really don't want to apply anti-fouling paint and will dry sail after I modify the trailer with keel guides and slicker beds to make launch and recovery easier. Any suggestions on repair and trailer mods are appreciated. Thanks Rimantas "Ray" Aukstuolis

Hi All, It's been a while, but we are pleased to announce that our Montgomery 23 is finally in the water. It is boat #2 with the new style deck. Construction began in 2004. Gail decided to drive the project to completion (bless her) a couple of years ago. It had been sitting at our factory since 2010. The boat was completed by Mr. Ron Moore and his wife Martha (bless them) of Moore Sailboats. There was a lot of work to be done so the project took a while. Ron Moore is a master boat builder extraordinaire, so the build quality is exceptional. (He built our Moore 24 for us back in '84, which we still sail). He and Martha came out of retirement to do this project for us. Inboard diesel, custom sails and custom cushions. We had to increase the length of the double berth, complete all of the electrical, redo the centerboard and add a hoist, go through the engine, which had never been run and complete construction of the interior, We re looking forward to spending quality time on her. salngail glesser (Persistence is King)

Cover ideas for M15?

I'm kind of thinking about a cover for the M15. I've been using a tarp over the mast, but I'd kind of like a custom cover. Any ideas? Vendors? Prices?

Thinking of selling my M-15, East coast (Maryland)

I have a move coming up in the next year (hopefully), and I'm thinking of maybe selling my '88 M-15, #412. Though I'll be moving to coastal NC, I haven't sailed it since 2012. Would I when I get there? Who knows. It's been garage stored since 2003 when I bought it from John Harris (Chesapeake Light Craft). Talk me out of it, or into it. Untitled trailer, which has been a hassle, but the Honda 2 HP has a new carburetor from this past winter. John Tyner M-15 #412 "Chimpanzee"

M15 rudder assembly question

I want to take apart the rudder on my newly acquired M15 for refurbishing and would appreciate your help. Is there anything unique about the bolt that passes through the lower Pintle bracket and the rudder? On my rudder this bolt has a lock nut and threads on each end. Both lock nuts are "frozen" to their respective bolt ends. Each nut turns freely left & right independent of the other nut. In other words, the bolt seems to be broken in half. The bolt(s) don't move in or out when turned. I'm reluctant to force out without checking the group's wisdom. Anything unique about this bolt? Your help is much appreciated. Fair Winds, Mike W

Montgomery 17', project boat, $3,000

1975 Montgomery 17' Clean Wisconsin title. Boat is located in NW Wisconsin, near Hayward. The water incursion spot in the aft port side of the keel ended my grand plan to get her back in sailing shape. The boat needs more time and attention than I'm willing to give. I bought the boat last fall and it's been on the trailer since then. The swing keel condition is an unknown. I have never raised the mast - it is straight and the rigging seems to all be there. I briefly looked at the 2 sails and re-bagged them. I made a new tiller out of solid oak. The 5hp Nissan motor is virtually new (previous owner)and comes with a gas tank. Previous owner replaced the trailer tires and installed new lights and wiring. The deck to keel mast support is solid and done right by a previous owner. Bob 816-926-1045

I'm going to be getting a Montgomery 12 back on the water again and I've got lots and lots of questions. It's mostly there, but there look like some problems. It seems there is a lot of sail for a light boat, so I'm guessing it was meant to go fast. How is the mast for the Montgomery 12 supposed to fit on the bottom of the boat? was it originally supposed to have a tabernacle like the M15? Are the sidestays and forestay supposed to be 1/8 "? Seems the hanks for the jib would prefer 3/32" Any pictures or descriptions would be great.

M17 "Pajarita" is afloat again! ...and some improvements/mods

Splashed her this past Thursday, into Siltcoos lake near Florence OR where she'll be for a while at Westlake marina. Got an hour or so shakedown cruise in. I added mainsail leech telltales. Highly recommend it! It has already during the shakedown cruise improved my ability to trim the main well. Especially when a well drawing jib is back-winding the front part of the main, it looks like I was often sheeting in the main too far. Makes it look like the main is drawing better, but the tale the telltales tell is no, it's stalled out. Even if as much as the front 1/3 of the main is soft and fluttering from jib slot air, that's fine, the leech telltales are streaming. As soon as I sheet in main to try and 'fill the belly' of the main, it starts to stall. Also I set up a telescoping rear mast crutch, as in that video of a Catalina mast raising someone posted here a while back. Works great, also highly recommended, especially if you are raising/lowering mast solo. Two main benefits: 1) with the crutch raised up before sliding the mast base back to the step, the shroud spreaders stay in front of the crutch. No need to lift them over the crutch. 2) the starting point for raising is higher than I could lift one-handed, and considerably more stable/secure than me lifting one-handed. It's high enough that the pulpit is adequate to lift from, though I used a post a foot or two higher anyhow as I don't like to stress the pulpit that way. I took a couple pics of the crutch in action, will take a few of the details and post later on. Next mod for the trailer is a telescoping front mast crutch. Down for transport, keeps the mast weight off the pulpit. Up for raising/lowering, providing a raise/lower line attachment point several feet higher than the pulpit. And while the trailer has no boat on it...some assorted trailer maintenance and improvements, the biggest one being rebuilding the front end to have a telescoping tongue.
