I own a 1983 Montgomery 15. Last summer was my first time using the boat due to the pandemic and some other health issues but I did manage to launch and keep at a dock on Lake Pymatuning (OH/PA border) from August to September. Apparently the boat was always dry sailed, and never had anti fouling paint applied as the bottom was clean when I bought it almost three years ago. When I hauled it out (dumb me) there was algae on the bottom. I was able to get it pretty clean using a marine algae cleaner and powerwasher but I'll give it another hit in the spring. As I was powerwashing, I seem to have removed a 3" section of fiberglass from the fin keel, forward on the port side. Looks like exposed metal. Is this lead or steel? Can't see well in there. How should it be fixed/patched? I really don't want to apply anti-fouling paint and will dry sail after I modify the trailer with keel guides and slicker beds to make launch and recovery easier. Any suggestions on repair and trailer mods are appreciated. Thanks Rimantas "Ray" Aukstuolis

Ann: I recommend - Remove the pan. It looks janky. Show the boat without it present. Clean up the area under the cockpit. Vac, scrub, etc. Better would be to paint with Interlux BilgeCoat. Follow prep as outlined on the can. Make sure the edge, from cutting out the pan, isn't sharp. If need sand away edge and burrs with 120g sandpaper. Don't sand the shiny visible bits of gel coat at the edge, just round off any sharps. Does anyone on the west coast of the USA have an M23 they would be willing to let me come see? I am interested in purchasing one, but have never seen one in person... I want to look at the design in person before I spend too much time searching for such a rare boat. To moor a vessel properly you have to meet four conditions: - The bow has to remain in a spot where you want it to be - The stern has to do the same - The boat has to be prevented from moving forward or backwards at the moor location. To accomplish this you need four mooring lines: - A bow line - A stern line - A forward spring line - An aft spring line The first line to go ashore should be the forward spring line. This line is is cleated at your anchor cleat and then is fastened to the dock. When it is cleated, it stops the boat from moving forward. The second line will be the aft spring line. It goes from a stern cleat on our boat to a cleat on the dock at the bow or further forward - where ever... Now your boat can't move forward or backwards. The next line are the bow and stern lines. As their name implies, the bow line goes from the bow of your boat to a cleat on the dock. The stern line does the same. With these four mooring lines in place, you boat can't move forward or aft; and the bow and stern of the vessel are fixed as well. Next problem: Prevent abrasion of your hull on concrete surfaces, or barnacle covered pilings. This is where fenders enter the game. If you are at a place, with no tide, and negligible waves, and you are mooring against a fairly smooth surface, one fender hung at the middle of the boat should suffice. If, however, you are docking in an area with high speed outboard boats towing water skiers, or big stink-potters who totally disregard the "NO WAKE" rule, you need more, and better protection from their waves. The answer to this problem is to use a "Fender Board". A fender board can be any old piece of a 2 X 4 , say 4 feet long. At the ends of the 2" surface drill a hole for a line. Thread a piece of 1/4" - or what have you - line through each hole and put a stopper knot on the bottom end. Voila, you now own a fender board. At this point you will need two fenders on the side of the hull. The fender board is hung on the outboard side of the fenders. Now your boat can bounce in the waves, but all the rubbing against the dock is done by the fender board. Over time it can get chewed up by - in my case - barnacles and tides. Building a new fender board, now that you know how to make one - probably takes you 15 minutes. It is as important as fenders are on a boat. Happy sailing Connie ex M15 #400 LEPPO ;

M17 Cockpit floor/bottom paint removal

I went to pickup my M-17 from the sandblaster yesterday and they didn’t even start on it! The owner of business was not present so I pulled it home thinking $900 was a little steep for paint removal anyway Maybe it was a blessing in disguise? I think I’ll just remove it myself and save $$$. I guess the options for DIY are Sanding/Scraping Or Chemically removing bottom paint. If anyone has a method please share. I drilled 3 exploratory holes under cockpit floor yesterday and the interior core is bone dry despite many spider cracks in the non-skid and a subtle cracking sound when walking on it. I’ve been reading a bunch on Fiberglass repair and it seems like a simple delaminatiom. The one technique recommended is to use thinned epoxy injected into holes in the non-skid @3’ apart over delam area (pretty much all of it). Then sand and epoxy/paint. Does that seem like a good solution? I have all the supplies now to start transom repair which I hope to start Monday. Erik Sent from my iPhone
