I own a 1983 Montgomery 15. Last summer was my first time using the boat due to the pandemic and some other health issues but I did manage to launch and keep at a dock on Lake Pymatuning (OH/PA border) from August to September. Apparently the boat was always dry sailed, and never had anti fouling paint applied as the bottom was clean when I bought it almost three years ago. When I hauled it out (dumb me) there was algae on the bottom. I was able to get it pretty clean using a marine algae cleaner and powerwasher but I'll give it another hit in the spring. As I was powerwashing, I seem to have removed a 3" section of fiberglass from the fin keel, forward on the port side. Looks like exposed metal. Is this lead or steel? Can't see well in there. How should it be fixed/patched? I really don't want to apply anti-fouling paint and will dry sail after I modify the trailer with keel guides and slicker beds to make launch and recovery easier. Any suggestions on repair and trailer mods are appreciated. Thanks Rimantas "Ray" Aukstuolis

Bow pulpit. My boat did not come with a bow pulpit. Is there any resource for getting one made or used.

Gentlemen, 1. I have started the repair process of my cracked shoal keel by removing the steel punchings. 2. Dave Scoobie visited the other night and suggested I ask Jerry for the weight of ballast to purchase. a. Hull # MMP 173320981. 3. So far I have pulled out most of the steel punchings. a. Just shy of 300 lbs. b. There is a lot steel punchings that just went everywhere, not sure if was 10% of what I have removed everywhere though. c. The remainder in the keel will probably take a week or more to chase out. The solidified oxidized stuff just doesn't want to leave the boat. 4. I have the day off Friday and a local source of reclaimed range lead shot #7 to #9 that will provide me the weight I need (500 lbs is possible). a. If possible would like to purchase all the lead I need. b. No worries, if I don't hear from anyone prior to Friday, between excavating the stubborn steel ballast pockets and figuring out how to cast resin lead bricks, I'll have opportunities to purchase additional lead in the future. Any reason stern light can't be mounted low on the mast or on the cabin top? ( other than interpretation of rules). From a dist I doubt. Hey all., this is just the best forum. Special thank you to John, Keith, Henry, and Dave for answering my questions about anchoring setup(s). You all provided a nice welcome, great pictures and thoughts that will help me with setting up or being confident in anchoring this fine vessel. I have been actively reading the other posts over the last few months and realize that one of the best benefits of owning a Montgomery is this forum. So, thank you, all very much. To answer a few questions that were asked of me: 1) my M17 is located in West Palm Beach, Fl. I also live in a small coastal town in Oregon, and sail in Newport Bay and offshore with my 18’ Pacaroon (Sam Rabl design). Do have ideas/plans to someday to get the Montgomery to the PNW… 2) The M17 that I own has the aluminum toe rail, (for sure. I won’t cut it). I want to keep the boat as original as possible. Anyway, thanks again. I look forward to keeping up to date with the others that post on this forum. It’s a pleasure. My 1974 M17 has a large center-located bow cleat which is where I make fast the anchor rode. Being as old as it is, it also has the wonderful full length anodized aluminum toe rails which are very low-friction, so I have no separate chocks as the rode just slides over the toe rail. It is stopped from shifting much aft by the bow pulpit stanchion. Not sure when M17s changed from the aluminum to wood toe rails, which do you have? My anchor lives (so far anyhow) in the small starboard locker and not on the bow so no pulpit mount or bow roller etc. on mine. When anchor set walk rode to the bow. Store in the deep Port cockpit locker. Tie rode to the big cleat in the center of the foredeck. I assume your boat has aluminum toe rails. Run the rode over the toe rail. Hi all, I recently bought a 1980 Montgomery 17 and was trying to figure out the best way to setup the anchoring system. Not so much on types of anchors, but, more importantly how the bow is set to receive the anchor rode, there isn’t a Sampson post, or what I feel is proper or more functional chocks or bow roller (?).
