Fixing an M15 hull to deck joint crack

So I finally got around to fixing some cracks in the hull to deck joint on my M15, and wanted to report how I did it. These were there when I purchased the boat, likely from "docking at hull speed" or some similar activity. First, I widened the crack with a cutoff wheel attached to a dremel. Next, I taped over the crack leaving a small opening on each end. Then I filled a 12cc curved tip irrigation syringe with epoxy thickened with cotton fiber (e.g. West System 403 microfibers). I cut a hole in the center of the tape, and used some butyl tape to temporarily seal the syringe, and then applied pressure while holding the butyl tape seal with the other hand. This injected the epoxy at pressure deep into the crack. Once it started pouring out the ends of the tape, I wiped them clean and taped them up one at a time, and finally taped up the injection hole in the center. See the attached photo of the setup. M15 bow repair

Hello all, The attached pdf gives a good overview of the crack in the bow of my M15 and my repair thoughts (I prepared it to send to one of the West System tech advisors). Any input and advice any of you have would be most welcome- I'm a newbie to fiberglass repair and I'm looking forward to getting this fixed so I too can get the boat in the water! A secondary question- I'm actually starting to wonder if I should repair from inside. If I do open up the hull liner, is it worth adding a bow eye bolted through the stem? Has anyone retrofitted one and what would be the best way to install it? For those boats with one from the factory, how is it reinforced on the inside of the stem? My 1977 M17 has a HawkEye depth finder installed by a previous owner. I'm not sure what exact model is installed, but it appears to be similar to the DepthTrax 2B currently shown on their website ( https://hawkeyeelectronics.com/collections/sailing/products/depthtrax-2b-bo…) The transducer is "glued" to the hull in the v-berth area. I finally got the boat out this weekend for my initial shake-down sail but the depth finder just showed 0 depth. The previous owner did not mention any issues with it. The info on that page states: Glue-In Installation is for NON-CORED hulls or aluminum hulls thinner than 1/8” ONLY. Glue-in mounting of the transducer is NOT suitable for all vessels. Does the M17 have a cored hull or should this finder just work? Thanks, Rob

Hello all, This weekend We are going to look at, and probably purchase, a 2011 Montgomery 15 that has had very little use. The sails are actually still crinkly! As the car is not up to towing 800 pounds of boat plus trailer weight, she will be living in a slip in Branford, Ct, on Long Island Sound. I’ve enjoyed little boats for the past 40 years, always small enough to reach over the side and touch the water, but this will be my first sailboat in a while. My wife has a sense of adventure, and loves being on the water. The M 15 is actually luxury compared to my last boat, a 12 foot gaff rigged catboat. On that one I had many fun overnights, and once took a two week cruise while sleeping under a boom tent. Right now I’m scratching my head about how to paint the centerboard and trunk while the boat is on the trailer. Any suggestions are welcome! Gaeton Andretta Milford, Ct Sent from my iPad

Trailer

We are the new owners of a 1981 Montgomery 15. So far the boat itself is fairly solid. My question is on the trailer. It came with a 1983 shoreline trailer built in Irving Texas. Not original to the boat as I understand. One , the trailer frame seems solid. It would have been built in the pre EPA galvanization process ban. But everything bolted to the frame , axle , springs , risers etc are rusty and dated. Two , my concern is with the height on the trailer. It seems to high for this boat and I feel it will create a problem getting the boat off and on. How high is to high? How low is to low? Since I plan to replace axle and springs I guess a drop axle would be the answer. I’ve included a few photos to give some idea of the profile. Thanks for your time and advise.
