Sad day for Catalina owners. Catalina Yachts Announces Loss of CEO Frank W. Butler Woodland Hills, CA – November 15, 2020 – Catalina Yachts today issued the following statement: It is with great sadness that we announce that Frank Willis Butler, President and Chief Executive Officer of Catalina Yachts, passed away November 15, 2020 in Westlake Village, CA, due to unexpected complications from a recent illness. We extend our most heartfelt condolences and sympathy to Frank's family. Our thoughts are with them at this most difficult time. A sailing icon and industry “kingspoke”, Frank Butler has introduced hundreds of thousands of people to sailing during his lifetime. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Frank have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Frank leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Catalina Yachts. *** Born in California in 1928, Frank’s line of popular sailboats put more than 85,000 Catalinas on the water throughout the yachting world. His boatbuilding career began in 1962, when he contracted with a Southern California builder for a 21’ daysailer. The builder was unable to finish the boat, and gave Butler the tooling. He completed building the boat himself, found he enjoyed the process, and agreed to take over the company. A few years later he founded Catalina Yachts, which has grown to become the largest builder of fiberglass production sailboats in the United States, a position it holds to this day. A key to Butler’s success in the sailboat industry was his attention to Catalina customers. Handling warranty issues himself, owners were nearly always surprised and reassured to get a personal call from Frank to discuss their concerns. Butler was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2013. In recognition of his support of the Congressional Cup, a world match racing event, Long Beach Yacht Club awarded him the Crimson Blazer. He was also a founder and lifelong member of the Westlake Yacht Club in Westlake, CA. Following his graduation from Glendale High School, he served in the US Navy. He met his wife, Jean, at a school dance; they recently celebrated their 71st anniversary. Frank is survived by Jean, their four daughters, Deborah Reese, Mary Linn, Nancy Bear, and Karen Butler; three sons, David, Robert and Steve; 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Dave Have other skippers improved the cockpit drains in the M15? I am planning to take the Pelican to sea and if I took a wave over the stern the cock pit would not drain fast enough......right? Anything with a buffing agent will remove the alum oxide where the anodizing is missing. The oxide is a very effective protectant. Buffing compound will also damage/remove the anodizing. I'm sure there is discussion out there on some www-site on waxing aluminum spars but IMO you are making work and causing more work to be needed in the future. I never once had anyone every question how the masts looked on my '84 M15 and '83 M17. Folks looked at the brightwork and shiny gel coat topsides and hull. SWEET PEA's (a M17) tanbark sails also received positive comments. Raise the mast and go sailing. Winter storage

Hi folks: A note on winter outside storage if you use your boat in colder months. My M 15 is covered with a tarp over the mast like a giant tent. After each use I make sure all water drained on drive home. Make sure no debris like leaves clogging center board slot so it will not hold water in cockpit. I use an electric motor in winter and the outboard is stored in garage. Hardly use motor - sail from and to dock. All electronics with batteries are stored in a backpack that goes in and out of boat with each sail day. The front of the trailer is lower than back to allow water to drain thru CB slot. And no accumulation in cockpit. Even though boat is covered wind may send snow or rain inside. Although we can have 40 degree days it gets down in 20s at night and ice can cause damage. I check boat every day it is covered for water and ice, except when traveling. Haven’t had trouble. Anyone have ideas? Pete Chinook Breeze Sent from my iPhone

Sails

Hi folks: Since I sail thru winter and trailer to the reservoir I worry about wet sails at the end of the day. I’ve stores my sails through winter in the cabin of M15 and had no trouble over last five years in temps in teens. Idaho is pretty dry even in winter and the weather station in the boat indicates low humidity. However today I’m going to be in snow and rain on the reservoir and wondering if it would be a good idea to store the sails in the garage overnight to dry out before putting them back in the boat again until next weeks sail. They are new sails from Elliott Paterson. Do sails she’s the water? Is there a chance for mold? Worry wart sailor What do u guys do? Pete Sent from my iPhone
