Motor for M17

Hello fellow Monty owners, my 1982 M17 came with a trusty old Evinrude 4hp, 2 cylinder version (see attached, old picture). Advantage -- lightweight (35lbs). Disadvantages -- works only sometimes, and has left me stranded a number of times in no-wind conditions; very noisy; uses smelly gasoline -- my wife complains about this a lot; no reverse; no alternator. Recently it has caused me enough troubles that I decided to try looking for another motor. One model that I was looking at was the Tohatsu Propane 5hp which seemed to do everything right. Until I looked at the weight -- well over 65 lbs! As currently set up, my boat has the original fixed motor mount, and I leave the Evinrude there all the time, including when trailering long distances. Never had a problem. After seeing the weight of the Tohatsu, I started having doubts that it would be a good idea to get it. I fear that keeping it on the mount all the time will damage my transom or my mount during trailering. Three questions: a) Does anyone have experience with keeping a heavy motor on the mount all the time?b) If the Tohatsu is not the right one, are there recommendations for a lightweight, reliable, motor for the M17 that is quiet and has reverse? I don't think the Honda 2hp is powerful enough for the M17. c) Alternatively, do people feel that I may simply be better off doing a complete refurbishing of my Evinrude? I could get it in tip top shape for about $150, I guess. I am handy with mechanicals, and I have in the past replaced points, condensers, etc. Thanks for all your comments!Andrei.

M17 motor mount

As I recall, Gary Oberbeck had made a sweet motor mount from mast section welded to aluminum plates. All very elegant. I can't send photos, either. My 2 hp Honda in the notch is perfect. I wouldn't consider any other setup. Jon Barber Monty17 Ol'44

Motor Mount

I want to move my 5hp long shaft Mariner out of the transom notch and onto a separate bracket to get it lower. It cavitates when I step out of the cockpit. The motor head sticking into the cockpit also blocks the tiller from its full swing. What bracket or mount do you recommend? The Garhauer does not seem to be available any more. Henry Monita

I have two Honda 4 hp, 60 lbs, with one 10 years old and a new with 1.4 liter internal tank. Having had a number of others I would not consider anything but Honda. I have alway left my motor on the mount with all boats I’ve owned when trailering. One trip West to East Coast longest. When I bought my M-17, 2005, it had spent It’s life on the Chesapeake with a Honda BF 2.3 on it. It did not meet my needs for long distance, plus I like having reverse over swinging the motor. I can’t comment on the 2.3 as to power but with my 4 hp I run at mid power in everything on Lake Ontario. The reason for distance is I’m in upper NY with lots of canals and the same in Canada. A big plus for me with the New 4 hp is the internal tank option but when needed you can attach an external tank by the flip of a switch on Motor. I paid $1300 for my 4 hp and out of curiosity checked cost of 2.3, $999. Frankly I believe all the advantages you get with the 4 hp is well worth the cost. The only advantage i see to the 2.3 is if you wanted to take it on or off the mount often. It does have a great reputation. I should also add I have a security line attaching motor to mount just in case for both on road and in water. I use a bicycle cable lock. I tried to send pictures of my motor mount but file to big and rejected. I couldn’t find manufacturer of the one I have but works easy. No name on it nit my research looking for manufacturer I found a mount on Amazon that looks as good as a Westmarine, had three, and all $300. One on Amazon rated to 25 hp cost $59 including all for mounting. Had to check again to make sure I was correct on it. It’s there and everything correct from me. Still looking for one on my M-17. Forestay Adjusting levers?

Alright Dave, here’s a question related to one of my winter projects. I’ll be replacing the stays (friend’s story of loosing mast first day of a San Juan cruise convinced me new wire and the peace of mind it would bring are worth it). I’ve contemplated adding a adjusting lever to the forestay to make setting up and tensioning the rig even easier. Curious if the M boat hive mind has any opinions on a) whether a forestay lever is a good addition on an m15, and b) if there is a specific one folks would recommend. Siltcoos Lake report

Here's a couple shots of 'Pajarita' at her rustic berth at Westlake resort on Siltcoos lake (different days, different weather). I had her in the lake for a month, give or take a day, late July to late August. Mostly it's calm overnight and mornings and wind comes up starting about 10-10:30 am, pushing in from the coast just a few miles away. Within 1 1/2-2 hours it is up to full force for the day, which in summer is often upper teens in knots and more on 'windy' days (when there are small craft warnings offshore). A forecast under mid-teens is considered a mellow day in that area... Prevailing winds are from the N to NW. There were a few days with different conditions, one with wind from the S to SW which was swirlier because there are more hills in that direction vs. flatter land to the N to NW. So there's a window of somewhat mellow sailing for a bit starting mid-morning and then it gets to be good practice conditions for high & generally gusty lake winds. The wind is smoother on the far (SE, from the marina) side of the lake. It is strongest and gustiest in the W-NW corner, including Westlake/Dunes City, where the marina is. In particular the approach to the marina is normally upwind and more intense (stronger, gustier) the closer you get. If you look it up on a map you can see Jernigan island that creates a pinched area for some extra swirl and gustiness heading towards the marina. Most of the time I left the first reef in my main, as I knew I'd have to reef soon after setting out anyhow. I just put the full jib out to start, if I was out early enough, and then reefed it in progressively as the wind picked up. Definitely a nice lake to sail on if you're within hauling distance & don't mind strong winds most of the time. Westlake resort is quiet & funky, the owner Brandon & his family & sister-in-law etc. run the place,all very nice people.
