Gerry's M23 "Dhana" has the Hunting Beach mast raising system, and a former owner, Mr. Dick Lane, even went as far as constructing a mounting on the Harken traveler for a 12v winch motor to raise the mast without using a sheet winch. Used it every time in the spring at the start of the sailing season. Clever, those Brit engineers..... Clearing a railroad trestle

Hi all, I need to regularly (and easily) clear my Sage 17 under a 22’ +/- railroad bridge. I’m thinking of inducing heel with a water bucket or bag similar to the big boat technique used on the Caloosahachee in FL (see video called Boat Balls - https://youtu.be/WGAzt-8minI) My wife did the calculation based on 25’ from waterline to the masthead (to be confirmed with a Windex installed) and the weight needs to be 14’ from the mast. My guess is that heeling toward the OB (to keep it in the water) with my weight and a 5 gallon (or so) bucket of lake water and a pre-measured halyard (for height) and tailing line (for the 14’ measurement) and a boat hook to push bucket out will do it. Has anyone done this before? Any advice? Thanks, Erik

Hull to deck joint

We've got an old 1974 M17 that I bought for a song (well, for the price of a decent guitar), and it's going to need a lot of work. Most of the work will be cosmetic, but when I got her she was full of water, and I'm wondering if all that water came in through the hatch and companionway, or if the hull/deck joint is susceptible to leaks. I'm not sure how the joint is constructed, or if I ought to pull and re-bed the toerails. Or if the boat will pop apart if I remove the toerails! Any thoughts about what I might want to look or watch out for before I put her in the water?

Cruising San Juans and Gulf Islands

Just getting ready to do some cruising around the San Juans and Gulf Islands for the next couple of weeks and contemplating how much fuel to carry for my 6 hp four stroke engine. Not sure how much a little engine pushing a little boat (M17) would consume, if the winds are not agreeable. David Scobie, how much fuel do you usually carry on your travels?

Once I used a hacksaw blade to cut through a nut which was stuck between my M15 centerboard and skeg keel. Crawled under trailer with a flashlight and starting sawing. Took no more than 5 minutes.
