Hi, My name is Darrin and I'm new to this list. I live in northern CO and I have developed the bug to go sailing - although I am a newbie here, I am no stranger to water; I'm an avid and long-time whitewater canoeist and whitewater rafter. I'm also used to doing long self-supported trips. Recently someone pointed out to me that as a landlocked individual, I would have more frequent and varied sailing opportunities if I purchase a smaller trailerable boat as opposed to a larger boat, and I can see the wisdom in that. A larger (25-28') boat will likely take longer and be more involved to set up, will be more difficult to store, will likely stay for the whole season at one single body of water, will potentially be more difficult to single hand (at least for a newbie like me), and will be more expensive to own/store/maintain. I'm 6'1" tall and weigh about 220 lbs. I'd like to have the ability to do the following: - be mobile so that I can sail in various CO lakes and not be limited to just one body of water - single-hand the boat during times when I am alone - have enough room on and in the boat for weekend overnight trips with my wife and daughter - having the ability to beach the boat or get close to shore would be a plus I'm considering an M-17. I like it's lines and its simplicity; it's trailerable and I believe that it would be reasonably easy to set-up/take-down by myself. We don't need to bring a lot of stuff other than food, cold beer and a change of clothes. I am hopeful that sometimes perhaps I could sleep in the cockpit under a tarp, which would free up space in the cabin for my girls. Here's what I'd like to know.... given what I have listed here, do you feel like the M-17 would be a good fit for my family and I? Will my wife and I be able to fit in the v-berth for sleeping and will my small daughter fit on the quarter birth? If not, is there another boat that you would recommend based on the criteria that I have listed here? Thanks so much in advance! -Darrin

I really don’t have instructions for rigging a 17, and it’s been 25 years since I have made one. Every time I move I throw stuff away! I’d suggest that you get on the Montgomery list; see the CC above, and most of those people are smarter than me. Be specific in your questions and they will answer. I remember the name ‘Bill Tosh’ but too many years have passed. Do get a spinnaker since you have the gear; the 17 really comes alive off the wind. Also rebuilt the trailer while I was resting! All-in-all, I'm done except for the rigging. I've got the mast up (hopefully correctly!), but I have a huge bag of all kinds of lines, sheets, and halyards, and not sure what goes where. If you have something like Delivery Instructions for new owners (I've seen that for the M15), that and my new sails I'm working with Bill on, would probably get me going the right direction. M23 Rig Tuning - Mast Rake

Hello, I was curious if any of the M23 owners would be willing share their rig tuning experience. I would also greatly appreciate some thoughts from Jerry if he is willing to respond. What is the proper amount of mast rake on an M23? One of the reasons I am asking is because my M23 forestay turnbuckle is set such that there is no room for adjustment. The threads from the forestay are threaded all the way into the turnbuckle and pinned. With the forestay shortened as much as possible, there is still quite a bit of mast rake on my M23. I think the rake is somewhere between 6" and 12" which seems excessive. I am considering ordering a shortened stay this winter so that I can actually adjust the length and set rake, but wanted to ask what the recommended rake was on an M23. I have had no problem controlling my M23 in higher winds, but I feel that the weather helm is a bit excessive when the winds pick up. Doesn't quite feel perfectly balanced. I know this depends on your headsail size as well of course, but am seeking general guidance. Also, is there any guidance on shroud and backstay tension? Thanks! Gerry

Cockpit Drain

Hi All, its me again, I certainly seem to have no shortage of questions for this forum. I was out for a sail off of Point Roberts yesterday in a pretty good breeze, maybe 15 knots and found my M17 to sail quite nicely indeed. This was essentially my first sail on my new boat and she performed admirably. At the same time though, a new issue popped up. The cockpit drain is acting like the opposite of a drain and the cockpit was taking on water. Back at port, when sitting in the cockpit, the water in the drain pipe, is sits just below the level of the cockpit floor. I presume a previous owner of this boat did some work on this part of the boat and is no longer configured as originally manufactured. What is the correct configuration of this pipe? The thru hull fitting is located way below the water line, which I am guessing is not a problem as long as it is configured correctly. Do these drains ever have check valves installed on them? transom ladder install successful

I just completed an install of a folding transom ladder for my M-15. Ladder came from West Marine but then I added two backing plates one on each side of the transom and attached the ladder onto the backing plate which was through bolted to the other plate on the inside of the transom. I tried my 220lbs on the ladder several times last night on a nearby lake. The ladder had no problems nor did I. Success!!
