Hi, My name is Michael Mann and in 1982, I sailed the Montgomery 15, Little Breeze from CA to Hawaii. I see on the web site that she has been rescued by new owners in Hawaii and I would love to correspond with them. I am about ready to pull the trigger on either of these two cars that is capable of towing +2000 lbs. Mazda CX 5 w 2.5 liter engine good to 2200 lbs Subaru Outback w 2.5 liter engine good for 2700 lbs if trailer has brakes on it (no need for brakes below 2000 lbs) Any actual confirmed feedback on experiences with these cars or hp of your tow vehicles engine. Smanll Boats in a Big Boat Mag.

Imagine my surprise when I opened my mailbox and found a Wrinkle Boat on the cover of the August issue of SAIL. It tuned out to be a Norseboat 21.5. Not only that, but there were a number of articles on our kind of small boat sailing. Beach Cruising by Roy Hoddinolt about sailing in a Sea Pearl 21, Nuts & Bolts of Sail Camping by Ida Little & Michael Walsh in the Bahamas for months. Yrvind the Swede sailing in home built boats 14 to 19 across oceans and even around the Horn. A Side Bar in which most of the small boats we subscribe too were mentioned, Sage 17 even had an ad in this issue. It also contained an article Something for the Weekend about a ½ dozen boats one would read about in SCA or GOB which I also subscribe to. Since the cat is out of the bag about my getting SAIL you might as well know that I also get Cruising World and have been thinking about getting Classic Boats :-) George Merry Helen II 96 M15 #602

Traveler

I'm a new owner of a M-15 #640. I'm setting it up for the first time and have figured most of it out But I need help with rigging the traveler. Would some one on the list give me some guidance on the line to use, its length and where it attaches. The boat has cleats on each stern corner are they for the traveler? Thank you, Willy Gorrissen

Drifter Sail

Who uses a drifter with their M17? What are the dimensions? I see in the archives there is a picture of Larry Yakes' Corn Dog that shows a drifter that appears to be tacked to the bow pulpit. How is that working out, Larry? How big is the sail? Do you tack it like a genoa or jibe it like a spinnaker? What type of fitting do you have on the bow pulpit? M15 portapotty

My recently acquired M15 lacks a portable head. Can anyone provide the brand and model number of a unit that fits the space available? If there are several that will fit, do people have an opinion as to the best? I have zero experience with such, as going over the side is sufficient for me, but the Admiral demands seated comfort. I would guess simple is the best but any input would be appreciated. The Admiral has rejected my suggestion of the old cedar bucket. Thanks, Paul M15 #471

North Carolina Cruising-Lower Neuse River

The small town of Oriental NC bills itself as the *Sailing Capital of North Carolina*. It does have a large number of big boat marinas but also has good facilities for small boat sailors. It provides a 1st class public ramp with 2 floating piers, a kayak launch, and a free downtown dock for overnight visitors (limited space esp. in the summer). You can find gunk-holes to explore and well-sheltered anchorages every 3 to 6 miles on the Neuse River between New Bern and Pamlico Sound. I made 2 trips from Oriental this week. On the first trip I reefed at the ramp. Although the creek where the ramp is located is sheltered you can easily experience twice the wind just a ½ mile offshore on the 3 mile wide Neuse River. After sailing under the high-rise bridge I was treated to low winds, about 8-9 knots, so out went the reef. An hour later I looked over my shoulder and saw a line of white up river. The reef quickly went back in and over the next hour the wind rose to 15 to 16 knots. Sailing at 5 knots and occasionally surfing at 6 knots I ducked into South River instead of my intended beach-combing destination. After an hour or two exploring anchorages in South River the wind died to a comfortable 9-10 knots for a good close-haul trip back to Oriental. The following Friday, I returned to do some beach-combing on a ¾ mile long beach near the mouth of the Neuse. Winds were lighter so I felt comfortable anchoring off the beach. It is a difficult place to anchor since in many areas a thin layer of sand overlays a hard pan of compressed peat. Your anchor appears to set in the sand but once it’s stressed it slides thru the sand across the top of the peat layer. On an earlier trip I had thought that I solved that problem by physically setting the point of my Delta plow anchor into the peat layer. Upon my return I was surprised to see that the plow point broke out with a 8”x 8”chunk of peat impaled by it. To anchor here you have to find the mud bottoms and to take a second anchor close ashore where the sand is thicker.

I don't think you can go wrong with Elliot-Pattison. They've made a lot of sails for Montgomeries. I've been happy with the work they've done for me. Tyler, I used a caulking gun with Six 10 epoxy. Thick stuff, works great. No mess. Premix nozzle, easy to apply in tight spaces like hull deck joint Neil Happy Connecting.
