We are new members of this particular site and are just learning how to participate. We are new to sailing, but not new to the water. My wife and I have a Mad River canoe which has taken us into the wilderness of upper Michigan for a 2 week lake portage trip. My 14' starcraft v bottom 9.9 mercury has been on local lakes and trips to lake Okochobi and others. I had been on one sailboat when I was 17 for about one hour at a friend parents lake house, but was not impressed, I wanted to captain the speed boat. Now at 52 years old, I decided to look into getting a sail boat. It seemed logical to me it was the perfect way to explore new waters. I did'nt know anyone who had a sailboat or anyone who knew anything about them. So the search began two years ago. To make a long story short my wife found a Montgomery 17, #641 about 300 miles from the house.We left our home with the check telling the owner not to sell the boat to anyone else giving him the selling price he asked. At the end of the day the boat was home safely in the driveway. Our boat looks exactly like the picture of Seafrogs (down to the green strip) but without bottom paint. I also added life lines which my wife loves. Everywhere the boat has been, land and water, people go out of their way to comment on it.

Anchoring Redux

So, yesterday had a really nice sail in Tomales Bay, my usual spot. Winds were light to start, and picked up nicely in the afternoon. All the sailing exercises I picked up at the Small Craft Academy I wanted to do I got done. Series of gybes, MOB drills, sailing backwards, standing up while sailing, sailing with my legs, all good stuff. Now came the anchoring. Perfect conditions. Wind a bit off the shore, shallow enough. So, I got out my Danforth and my new rectangular container complete with 80 feet of flaked rode in a figure 8. So far so good. I couldn't figure out if I dropped from the cockpit whether I should keep the line inside our outside the shrouds and pulpit. I elected inside, which was a mistake. In any event, dropped fine, backed the boat up with wind, set the anchor, and all was well. I walked forward and cleated off on the bow cleat. Had a nice lunch. Now for the fun part. Time to haul anchor. So, I raised the main to cock into the wind, walked forward and grabbed the rode, and pulled hand over hand forward. I easily raised the anchor, along with 20 pounds of reeds. So, I shook those off. In the meantime, the boat was sailing down wind happily without me steering. Now, I managed to wrap tons of rode around various things as I tried to deal with the line. I really looked like Inspector Clousseau by the end of it. Line everywhere. Amazing how much entropy there is on a boat. At least is wasn't 200 feet of it. At this point I shook my fists skyward, grabbed the tiller, and heaved to. Now I was stopped. I was able to extricate all of the line and flake it back into the container without hanging myself accidentally from the boom, stowed it all, and sailed off. Geez. I'm glad nobody was filming. Next time I will run the stuff all outside the shrouds and pulpit, leave the sails down, and try again. I've got a ways to go on that one. Daniel

Anchoring tackle

Montypals: Just got back last week from the Small Craft Skills Academy in Port Townsend. Fantastic experience. Anyway, based on that I have a bunch of things to think about. One of them is how to handle my anchor tackle. Presently I have a small danforth with about 6 feet of chain, and then about 80 feet of rode. I have put marks on the rode now to measure out how much is being payed out as I anchor. I would like to stow the thing in the port lazarette which on my boat is wide open to the bilge. How are you guys doing this? Bag? Plastic container? I know that the line needs to be carefully flaked into the container so that it runs free when paying out the line. Thoughts here? anyone willing to show me their M-15 in Annapolis area?

Hi guys. I am thinking about buying a new Montgomery 15. I have read a lot about them, including lurking on this list for a few years, but have never been able to see one. I plan to attend the Annapolis Sailboat Show on October 4th. Does anyone on this list live in that area and have an M-15 they'd be willing to show me? A sail on the boat would be phenomenal if you're willing but even just a chance to see one, sit in the cockpit and cabin, share useful tips and advice, etc would educate me tremendously. If anyone would be willing/able to help me out I'd be eternally grateful! All the best, ++Brian

Sean, Perfectly said. I feel like I'm in a fishbowl every time I sail my M23. The cameras and flash bursts when I round the point are too many to count. I'm sure you, bones and everyone else that owns a 23 can attest to this. I consider parting with mine, but realize I can't think of another boat this size that does what the 23 does, time after time after time. Sail fast!
