Hello Mark and Roberta, Wonderful story, that is one of the beauties of sailing, seeing all nature has to offer. What type of whales did you see?I was out on my M23 last week, and anchored for the night just south of Lake City on Pepin. In a large tree ahead of me was a nesting pair of eagles. I watched then come and go, with one of them fishing and snatching their dinner and breakfast very close to my boat. Truly majestic. We have a huge population of bald eagles on the upper Mississippi. You want to use a wax made for non-skid that won't make it slippery. I use Woody Wax. Aurora Marine also markets one. 2 weeks of "Makin' Time"

We are rolling out tomorrow with Makin' Time in tow. First stop is to Ruff Ruff, a small boat get together in eastern Ontario. Always the full moon weekend of August. 7-10 boats show up. 11 miles of a fresh water lake, without very few occupants to disturb. We plan a full moon sail on either or both Fri and Sat nights. Base is a small island that we all nose into at night for a campfire, and associated good times. Monday, we will haul out and head NW to Little Current on Manitoulin Island. Will launch at Spyder Bay Marina there and depending on the weather either head east to Killarney, or west along the North Channel of Lake Huron. Hope to get in both directions over the balance of the next 2 weeks. Boat is pretty well loaded and in good shape. The oppressively hot and humid weather has cleared out so we expect higher and more variable winds. Kind of like the summer has turned the corner towards...(dare I say...fall? 1984 Monty for Sale

replacing CB pendent

Hello sailers, Just last evening I had a shock as I raised my CB to go into the dock. I found most of the pendent line worn away .I was lucky to be able to grab the lower end with some pliers and pull it up and cleat it. I was hoping to try replacing the pendent by putting the bow on my trailer and doing the work on the boat ramp with the stern afloat. As I read many stories about CB work, I believe that will not work . The person I bought the boat from last year told me about a possible knot in the pendent, but that was only to keep water from coming in the cabin. I have been sailing with the pendent all the way down. From reading the list ( & Dave Scobie) , believe I have been sailing with the CB overextended. I did hear the CB clunking now and again in low wind situations, but I thought that was normal. I am hoping to do a pendent replacement this weekend, and get sailing again as I have a short season here in Wyoming. I will trailer it home, jack up the stern, and pull the trailer forward enough to clear. I believe I need 4' clearance, which I think I will get by both ramping up the trailer, and digging a ditch for the rest. I believe the next step is to drive out the stop pin. If I can not find the pin, I could also unbolt the pivot bolt, which is visible on my keel. I was thinking of using static climbing line as a replacement pendent , as it seems so durable. I will see what line is available here in the rock climbing stores. I am pretty sure I can get 5/16th line. I have read about the trick of removing the inside core to create a smaller knot . As I have 8 months of winter with the boat on the trailer, I will probably do a more complete CB refurbish then if needed. Thanks for listening and any additional advice will be appreciated. boom height

Hello gang, My Montgomery 17 is the first boat I have had with adjustable boom height, and I am not sure how to get the best out of the feature. I have been running my boom 17" above the deck, which marginally reduces forward visibility and probably misses out on some wind (and makes installing a vang problematic), but there are fewer issues with the various ropes and wires rubbing at the masthead, and perhaps somewhat less healing moment. I can raise the boom as high as 28", and wonder if anyone out there runs it that high, and what the consequences are. I could go with a fixed gooseneck, but I would not know how best to locate it for a variety of conditions, whereas some of you have been successfully sailing these critters in all types of conditions for years and years.
