Hi, My name is Michael Mann and in 1982, I sailed the Montgomery 15, Little Breeze from CA to Hawaii. I see on the web site that she has been rescued by new owners in Hawaii and I would love to correspond with them. Montgomery Sailboats are in high demand

And are built with top-notch quality. There is nothing in the market place faster, better built and as good looking as a Montgomery Sailboat. I don't run a factory; I run a very small boatshop. I built to order on a boat by boat basis. I do a lot of custom work when asked. Bronze ports, Stainless ports, extra ballast, Custom electrical systems, Idasailor rudders, anchoring packages..etc. This work is labor intensive. Quality takes time. I have 3 employees. These people are highly experienced in Laminating, construction, assembly and finish. Woodworking and other skills result in a absolutely beautiful sailing vessel. I use the best sails the best rigging, the best custom stainless fasteners..and yes....(laughing) the best cushions. This last 15 months have been EXTREMELY busy; hiring new help was impossible because all the good people are gone. We had a tremendous BACKLOG and we caught a break only when Pacific Seacraft employees (let go) began filtering into our shop looking for work. We did add some additional crew in the Laminating Shop and because of that we are caught up. Pacific Seacrafts Bankruptcy was good for us. Bad for the dozens of good people who are out of work. The FIRST question of anyone buying a new boat should be 'How is the construction quality'? First and foremost that is the most important issue. I can say that everyone has experienced and will continue to experience a BACKLOG of orders; especially if the boat is as popular as a Montgomery Sailboat. When we had an 8 month backlog and I actually turned down 2 M_17 orders so we could catch our breath. It is impossible to work any harder or any faster. Now that were caught up we can get back to our normal 50-70 days (depending on model and options). Also custom work really adds to the production time. One beautiful M_17 we did we cut the V berth out of and installed an oval bulkhead, custom shelves and inline potti area; with 4 bronze ports she is an amazing boat, but custom work takes time. Expect delays if you go radical on the interior. (I think BONES has a photo of that one...) We are really one of the only builders that entertain changes and options to satisfy the customer. This new Passagemaker M_17 were building (and installing a windvane on tomorrow) is going to be amazing. Other actual boat factories that produce boats for DEALERS (that Tod mentioned) like Precision and Compac are built on Factory Production lines for a large Dealership Network. Dealers who have these boats in stock can supply them right away. But ask for major changes on a future production boat and the wait will be many months. International Marine builds boats faster with more employees but those boats are piss poor sailers (upwind) and many arrive with a list of problems that are pathetic. That's not me. So try not to focus on the TIME factor. We can only go so fast. Hiring additional help is not an option because by the time you train someone the season gets slow and you have to lay them off. I can't do that. I have people that have been with me for 20 years; I keep us small and efficient on purpose. So be surprised if we hit the delivery time; which we do quite often. Be a little disappointed when we miss it; but get over it when you see your boat. Dozens of you know me; you've arrived to see me rig your boat, pack you up and shake your hand. (Heck...Gary Hyde even brought me a bottle of wine..!..Thanks Gary.!) One man bought a new M_15 from us and a new M_17 a year later.! The C word...Cushions. I inspect everyboat before it leaves for home. Scott's boat was leaving for the Bay Area early Friday morning; I was at the boatshop at 10:30 PM Thursday night, sleeping at the picnic table just inside the door, waiting for the cushion guy to arrive with the (late) promised cushions. He drove up, woke me up and I watched as he stacked them on the deck. We left. My man arrived at 3AM and hooked up the boat and slid the cushions inside the boat. I should have loaded them myself then I would have noticed they looked good but didn't have the required 'Squeeze' factor. Let's move on, shall we....? Fair winds Bob Eeg (949) 489-8227 Boat Builder

Larry, I'm really sorry...I totally forgot that you did ask for that. I was supposed to shoot some pics for you of the halyard setup while in Monterey and did forget. I have not had the boat out of the garage and rigged since then. The mast remains in horizontal position diagonally across my garage so not a good place for a picture. This weekend I'm heading up to Alaska on vacation for the week. So it will be a couple of weeks before I have the opportunity to rig and launch...probably at Folsom. I'll take the picture at that time. The stainless plate to which both the cleat and bullseye are attached has bent down, resulting in more effort (more leaning down) to secure the mainsheet when I need to do so. I've bent the ss plate up a couple of times but you can only bend ss so much before it will break. For a visual, the my current hardware looks very much like the Harken model 240 (look on Defender). Rather than replace with a new 240, after talking with a Harken rep I have decided for the purposes you mentioned, to go with a combo ratchet block and angled cam swivel base. Prbably something like the Harken #1235 ratchet block attached to the #144 swivel cam cleat. This will should only provide a better angle of control for the skipper, but also more purchase in ratcheting in the main under sporting conditions and close points of sail. All it takes is money :-( What say the rest of you M15 sailors? Any other ideas? Havasu Pocket Cruisers Website issues fixed

If you have recently (last 2 weeks) tried to access the web site for the Havasu Pocket Cruisers Convention, you may have had difficulty. The web site has been hosted for years now on Piczo.com which is where the original Montgomery Owners Photo Site lived before Bill moved it. That hosting service worked fine for us until a few weeks ago when suddenly there have been tons of issues and absolutely no ability to contact the company for support. Needless to say this was a minor disaster as the preparation for the event is in full swing with 83 boats already registered and the site being updated almost daily with new information. The Piczo site was made for someone with no experience at all in websites. It was very user friendly and required no software on your computer as it was all done "online". That part was great, although it made the site very limited in its capabilities. Nonetheless, it worked for the past 4 years for not only my own personal sailing site, but for acting as a website for each progressive event. Well, all that came to a crashing halt! Bummer! So...over the last two weeks I have scrambled to educate myself in the ways of "real" websites, although I still don't do HTML stuff. A new domain name was purchased (www.Sailhavasu.com) and new web host (Godaddy.com) obtained. After two solid weeks of transferring information and learning how to build and upload the new site to the web, it went "live" today. Some of the links are still under construction, but overall the site is up and seems to be working well. I apologize to those that were having trouble with the old site...believe me I have enough to do right now without taking two weeks to get this worked out, but in the long run, it's all good. We will have a much more stable, and capable site with customer support available 24/7/365 from a big player in the web site business. Hopefully, no more issues. As for the Havasumontgomerys.piczo.com site...Well, it's still up.However, I have no ability to upload images, the hit counters are frozen, and from day to day you may get it or you may get an error message that says "404 server not found". I am guessing that Piczo may be about to go belly up. After two weeks of trying to contact them I have gotten no repsonse. After seeing how much work it was to transfer everything from the Convention website over to the new website.....I just don't have the time to do that for all my personal stuff related to Dauntless, her restoration, trips, projects, etc. It may live there forever, it may be gone tomorrow. Who knows. Yes, it is way frustrating to me, but oh well, what are ya gonna do?. I'm pretty much planning on just abandoning it and leaving it be. It will be there till ......well, it's not....But unless Piczo pulls it together and fixes their site there will be nothing new on there anymore. Thanks to everyone for all the support of that site while it lasted. As for the Convention...a plea has been thrown down by one of the Potter guys to his compadres to get more Potters than Montgomerys here the February event. That just got posted on the event's message board within the last day or so. Sounds like a challenge to me! Any takers???!!! S

Early M17 Cast Iron Centerboard Question

I have a '74 M-17 with a cast iron swing keel. I have not seen much conversation about the early swing keel. Cranking the CB up and down I lost count at 120+ revolutions of the crank. This is a bear on the way back to the dock. Has anyone made any modifications to an early boat to make the process of cranking the CB up and down more efficient? Sailing the boat is a joy except for this chore.

Cruising the Florida Keys

Joe, For a guide of the keys, I went with "Cruising Guide to the Florida Keys" by Fank Papy. It's a fairly good description of the islands and has decent maps of each section he is talking about, suggested anchorages and places to pick up supplies. I had that guide, paper nautical charts of the areas I sailed, and a GPS with the local data loaded on it. As Bones suggested, I spent a lot of time studying the charts ahead of time, becoming familiar with where I wanted to go, places to see, areas to watch out for. George M17 #600

Hello Joe, I have read at least two guides and a few books describing exploring the Keys. This was a while back, so I would think an updated, recently published guide would be the way to go. Sailing on Lake Superior with two little boats

Not sure if I did this posting right, but here goes, these are pictures of sailing around the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior in July. We launched my M17 and Seaward Fox at Sand Bay in northern Wisconsin, sailed to Sand Island, barbequed on the beach and spent the night tied to the dock. After that we sailed to York Island where we had lunch, then to Raspberry Island for the evening. We were able to get the boats about three feet from shore, which makes it really easy for making supper on the beach. The next day we sailed back to Sand Island and stayed in the marina at Sand Bay for the night. Had great weather and got a chance to walk on the islands and see the lighthouses up close.
