The club's Far Horizons Award fittingly went to Lin and Larry Pardey, whose first circumnavigation consumed some 47,000 miles. The Pardeys hold the record for the smallest boat to have circumnavigated contrary to the prevailing winds around all the great southern capes and are the only couple to have circumnavigated both east-about and west-about on boats they built themselves, using traditional means of navigation and having no engine or sponsorship.

Intermediate jib size

Spring sailing season is approaching on North Carolina's Neuse River. Winds in the high teens and 20's are common. Prior posts have stated that an "intermediate" 60-65% jib of between 20-23 square feet was really useful on San Francisco's Bay in similar conditions. Does anyone have the luff, leach, and foot dimensions for such a jib? Jerry M, I believe, once said that a jib that came to about 18 inches of the hounds was a good sized intermediate. Does that mean that a full sized M-15 jib could be cut down by removing 18 inches across the foot? Seems like you may want to cut less at the leach than at the tack.

I would have to agree with Dave. The sentence "This boat needs more attention than I can give it." is more than a little scary! hahaha. Coming from someone that purchased a Florida boat that spent the better part of 25 years floating in nice warm tropical salt water.....uh.....yeah.....my advice.....HIRE a marine surveyor. A lot of things can hide under a few coats of ablative bottom paint. hahaha...I wouldn't choose to walk down that path again...I don't think I have it in me.....I'm sure 'Jo doesn't! hahaha :-) Sean www.havasumontgomerys.piczo.com

Halyards and mast head sheaves on M17

The wire section on my jib halyard is not long enough to reach to the deck at the stem fitting. When the jib is hauled down the top 2 hanks are still up on the forestay. The rope to wire splice is stopped at the masthead. I can get a new longer wire spliced on, or I was thinking about converting to all rope. However in looking at the masthead casting, there is not enough room for wider sheaves to handle rope. The casting only has a 3/4" slot where the sheaves are mounted. Has anyone done this conversion to rope? If so did you have to change the mast head to another casting? Where does Bob get the masts and fittings from? Dwyer or other? Thanks Bill Wickett M17

My wires were torn up when I got my boat and I thought the prior owner was just not careful. After repairing and breaking the wires three or four times I said thats enough. Not sure what brand but purchased deck fittings (one for lights and one for VHF)at West Marine and they work great. The hardest part was getting the VHF cable up though the compression post. On the newer boats it is a small tube and it was quite a job to get the cable all the way up and out at the cabin top. The light wires I ran out the same hole that is there for the cabin light wires, but I had to drill another hole on the other side to run the VHF out.
