I was out yesterday in Sweet Dream. It was my first trip since last August what with the hurricanes and all. Small craft warnings on the bay but the wind was starting to lay, 12 - 15 with gusts to 18. I had accidentally put a twist in the jib when hanking it on to the forestay and need to go forward to fix it. I thought of the GOB bungie trick but the M15 tiller has the lift mechanism that raises the rudder. I'm glad to know a simple line would work. Next time I'll try that. What a RIDE. I hit 5 knots with a reef in the main and a badly twisted 150 pounding into nasty chop. Don

Boat Balance-Three changes made a difference

After a month away from sailing, I had an opportunity to experience the Montgomery, perhaps as it was intended. During the month off, I did three things that contributed to better boat balance: 1. I wanted to replace the Honda 7.5 with a lighter Johnson 2 stroke 4.5 HP engine that also came with the boat. This may seem counter culture in these days of quieter, greener, and more fuel efficient 4 strokes, but the fact of the matter was that the Honda was just a beast on the back of the M17. The much lighter Johnson motor worked when I bought the boat, but it had sat for 8 years, so as a matter of course I rebuilt the water pump and carburetor. Matter of fact, the first carburetor I have rebuilt,,,well, in a long time. And as I remember it; there were parts left over in the kit; and you felt good about it. At any rate, the Johnson motor has an internal tank which also eliminated the need to keep a gas tank in the back of the cockpit-saving some more weight. 2. Secondly, the month was highlighted by refurbishing the keel. Previously the keel was stuck and I never had the opportunity to experience the boat sailing with the board down. 3. Finally, the last thing was to put some water (about 2.5 gallons) in the new 5 gallon fresh water tank that I placed under the "vee" berth. These three things really made a difference in the balance of the boat. It never was bad before, but now it is just that much better. ----Probably something you all knew already! I have a 5hp Honda 4-stroke on my M-17, but would be happier with a motor that weighs less than 62#. The last time I checked, there were only 2 prop pitches available for my present motor, a 170mm and a 190mm. With either of these I could reach hull speed at less than full throttle. Obviously a different pitch prop or a smaller motor is in order. Does anybody have a scource for a prop with a higher pitch? Tom Woodworth M-17 #330 "Wild Hare"

There was no plug inside Tullamore's mast. I filled it with those Styrofoam packing peanuts to keep the wires from rattling, and then plugged the ends with pieces from a swim noodle. Perfect fit, and extra floatation if the worst happens. Larry

Internal Mast Plug

I recently intended to put some foam pipe insulation over the electrical cables inside the mast to keep them from slapping the inside of the mast while at anchor. About 4 feet into the bottom of the mast I ran into something hard. An inspection with a flashlight revealed a bird's nest. However, after removing it a hard plug remained.
