Hello Listers, I agree with CDF and Sean's logic regarding this whole discussion. Both devices have their advantages and your boat should be equipped with a compass and GPS. I have seen one of the nicer chartplotter style Garmin color units in operation while on a 25 foot powerboat in the lower Keys. The small channels, islands, and shoals in the area really demonstrate the usefulness of a constantly updating GPS. But, like the Linn and Larry mantra of a sailor being able to repair any item onboard, you are not going to be repairing a microprocessor, surface-mount component GPS with your butane soldering pencil at sea. Bottom line, practice and know how to use both, and keep charts on board. Merry Christmas all! Bones

Purchasing Sails

Aloha from Honolulu! Little Breeze is in need of a new mainsail. I believe it's the original one that was used on the sail over from the mainland. Since this is all new to me, I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to let me know if I can get it through Montgomery or somewhere else. Even a good used one would suffice. I also would like to ask what the numbers mean on the sail. I know what the "M15" means but do the other numbers on the sail signify anything? Ours says 117. Rick, A sailing friend sent it to me -I just used it today to check on 'whipping' methods rather than do my own "invented" version - you know the one you figger out on yer own -sometimes works - mine usually doesn't! Traditional Compass vs GPS

Skip, Mounting a compass is even more complicated than what you propose. One must be very careful not to mount a compass near electronics or even iron or steel which could affect its ability to read accurately. Concerning a gimbaled compass, there are many available that have the compass card suspended in an oil bath which causes the card, or ball in this case, to always read level. I use a handheld oil bath compass on my boat. The advantage of the handheld is that it is always where you are and most are easy to mount somewhere. I use mine only as backup to my GPS, but when in use, it mounts on a console I made on the lower hatch board. I have a Garmin GPS76 Map and IMHO it can't be beat. It more than replaces the compass, but I keep the compass for backup. With the GPS one punches in some waypoints (long/lat destinations) and takes off. A pointer, on the screen, always points to the waypoint showing you where to steer. In my view the best advantage of using a GPS in that the unit always knows where you are, so steering errors, leeway or effects of current are always being compensated for by the unit. The pointer is always pointing to where you need to go. With the old system (compass) all these factors throw you off course. That's why dead reckoning is very important if you are relying on a compass. So, I say get a GPS. Even a simple inexpensive one is much easier to use than a compass. And keep a handheld compass as backup. Electronics can break, batteries go dead and I think that extreme cloud cover can block the satellites needed for GPS operation. Sean, So is that thing around your neck in your sailing pix a GPS? Or a hockey puck? I agree with the compass/GPS points made in Seans post, I use both but I will always remember an instructor telling me to "ALWAYS trust your compass" (seems they have the technology worked out on those compass things).
