North Channel Cruise

I'm planning on a two week North Channel Cruise in mid June. I'll probably drive from Ohio to Tobermory, take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry over to South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island), and then drive to Little Current (Manitoulin Island) on Saturday June 5th. I might end up taking the ferry on the morning of the 6th depending on how late I hit the road. At the present time I'm thinking of making a general counter clockwise spin around the North Channel, launching at Spider Bay Marina in Little Current and going north and then west to the Bustard Islands and west and then crossing south to the west end of Manitoulin and returning east again. Of course, all plans are subject to the weather and whims of the person at the helm! Mid June will probably be a bit ahead of the crowd and still kinda nippy. gelcoat oxidation

Any advise on treating gelcoat oxidation? I've heard penetrol works well. Any experiance with Starbrite's Glass Cote? Tom Obsessus M17

Gary, Haven't been sailing on Tipperary. However, that's where I was for the past few days. I've left her in Grants Pass, Oregon. That's about 400 miles north of San Francisco. I went up for a few days to get all of the items out of the cabin that may mold/mildew in the upcomming Oregon rains. I had a plan of bringing her down to SF in November or December but may put that plan on hold and wait until the spring. I'm really to busy to use her at the moment. I also had a plan of taking the winter off... however, I've been given an offer that's hard to pass up. So, I may keep on working. So many plans... so little time. Thanks for the info on the hatch boards. They are now on the short list. Bill

Bill, I dont know, thats a good question. I was going to order some directly from Bob but we found a marine carpenter in the Annapolis area and for about $100 including the teak he cut them to size. My buddy Greg Hann had his done at the same time and he was kind enuf to varnish both sets. Turned out good but it been a few years so it time for me to varnish again. Gary

M Question

I would really like to know just how many Montgomery sailboats are in the Monterey, San Francisco Bay area. I saw that the Washingtion group had a real nice outing. Great Pictures. I think that I am going for my second question here. Does the M17 have a mast system that handles a spinacker. The only reason that I ask is that I still have the sails on my 420. Walla Walla rendezvous

I'm sorry we missed the Walla Walla rendezvous last weekend. I have a good excuse, though. It was my wife's birthday and she requested that I take her for another 10 day cruise in the San Juan Islands. Of course, I wanted to please my wife so we went. We had a great time. Saw a lot of places we didn't get to in the June Rendezvous such as: Sailed the east side of Guemes Island after launching at Anacortes and made it all the way to Peavine Pass without tacking! (14nm @ 3kts avg) Anchored in Hunter Bay, Aleck Bay, Garrison Bay, and Eagle Harbor (don't try Eagle Harbor when the wind is from the SE) Saw the south end of the islands from the Strait of Juan de Fuca Haro Strait (beating to windward in 20 kts of wind with a pair of Orcas to spice things up woo hoo!) Had a great dinner at the Deer Harbor Inn on Orcas Island Stayed in Fossil Bay again when we were hoping to go to Matia (it was the first land we saw after spending 3 hrs in the fog with <100 yds visibility. Thank God for good charts, compasses, depth sounders, GPS, and careful pre-departure route plotting) Rode some wild tide rips and eddies in Rosario Strait around Clark and Barnes Islands. Hit 8.1 kts (over ground, 5.7through the water) running downwind with the ebb in Bellingham Channel on the last day. We had sun, rain, fog, great sailing wind, beautiful sunsets, and gorgeous moonrises. We slept as late as we liked, ate whenever we felt like it, and played cribbage every evening. My wife enjoyed it so much she may want this to be her birthday trip every year (she could do without the fog, though). I am one lucky guy. :-) Mark D.
