North Channel Cruise

I'm planning on a two week North Channel Cruise in mid June. I'll probably drive from Ohio to Tobermory, take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry over to South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island), and then drive to Little Current (Manitoulin Island) on Saturday June 5th. I might end up taking the ferry on the morning of the 6th depending on how late I hit the road. At the present time I'm thinking of making a general counter clockwise spin around the North Channel, launching at Spider Bay Marina in Little Current and going north and then west to the Bustard Islands and west and then crossing south to the west end of Manitoulin and returning east again. Of course, all plans are subject to the weather and whims of the person at the helm! Mid June will probably be a bit ahead of the crowd and still kinda nippy. today I tried an new variable speed electric trolling motor on a M17, on still lake, with no air, one person. I got the gauge to reach almost two knots, its a hang over the side wand type. The meter said it was pulling 47 amps and at full open it lasted almost two hours. It was very sensitive to position of the helmsman. approximately 745 watts per one HP, that comes to only 0.86 HP, two knots seem too high for so small a motor. A ready to sail M17 I think weighs in at 2200 lbs plus one person.

Regarding latches, if you weren't going to lock anything (many good arguments not to), what would be wrong with simply drilling a hole in the lid and running a bit of line out through the hole (knotted inside) and down to an appropriately sized clam cleat? Gilbert: I'm going to revise the current reefing arrangement on Sweet Dream. Right now, I've got a cheek block on the port side of the boom (Harkin Bullet). The 5/16" line from the 1st reef clew grommet goes dwn to the cheek block and then to a horn cleat. The proposed revision is to run a 1/4" line from an eye on the s'board side up to the 1st reef grommet, thru the hole and down to the new cheek block then run along the boom to a clam cleat with built-in fairlead located more forward, near the companionway. I'll tie a knot on the end and leave it loose. This way I can reach the clew reef line easily without having to reach way over the side and grab the boom. When i'm heaved -to, to take in a reef, the jib is backed and main is loose. As I pull in on the boom to reach the clew reef line the boat takes off, rounding down til i let the main go again. Quite a balancing act. Moving the cleat forward should help. The double purchase should also help. I believe that Doug has "Seas" rigged like this. I just had the second set of reef points added to the main but haven't rigged then. Steve suggests that the second reef be set up just like the first but on the opposite side of the boom. I'm going to look at this next week. I've also needed the reef recently. Took Sweet Dream on the Dauphin Island race in 18 - 25 knot winds and 3 to 4 ft head seas. One reef was all I needed, I wanted to keep the power up to blow thru the waves. Averaged 5.2 knots most of the trip. Let me know what you decide. Fair winds Don

Hi Scott, When we sailed in those waters - '68-'73, you were all alone out there. The Germans found the area, being just on the other side of the Alps, and today, there are marinas, and charter boats available. However, as soon as you get past the next island, it probably is pretty much as we knew it. Small islands; tiny towns on the islands; water for the town from cisterns catching water from the church roofs - the highest point on the island. We used to watch women climbing stairs to the church and then coming back to their houses balancing 5 gallon tins of water on their heads. That was the only water in the house. I didn't think to inquire about toilets - out houses? But still, a beautiful serene cruising area with good food, good wines, and beautiful vocal music. Dream on. Connie

Connie, Thank you for alerting me to this article. My CRUISING WORLD just came yesterday (apparently by mule team, as we get them late here on the left coast). Great article and photos. Definitely on the 'someday' list. Funds have been slow in coming, so I will likely have to defer any distant trips for some years. Hi Tom, When I installed my latches on an M15, I used S/S flat head screws and elastic stop nuts on the inside. I didn't have any clearance problems. Connie

Larry, I have never had a problem with following seas with "Wild Hare", which has the cutout for the outboard. We have been in short fetched following seas near San Carlos Mexico, and each wave that approached us (6 feet or so, short fetched) never made it into the cockpit, so no problem. The one thing that I am concerned with is the cockpit drains that route through a rubber hose that is inside the hull. If this hose should come loose or break, the water could come into the boat. I have corks that will plug the hole at the exit point of the cockpit drain, but I plan to modify the cockpit drain plan to mimic the new M-17's that exit the cockpit water through a wet locker and out, bypassing the interior of the boat. Has anyone else modified their cockpit drains like this? I think I may have read something in the archives like this, but "Two Buck Chuck" has limited my ability to search the archives this evening.
