Steve, Welcome aboard! The M15 is a great little ship, and can undertake considerable voyages, if you have followed Scott's adventures cruising north towards Alaska. I found that I had a leak at the aft end of the centerboard trunk in my M15, which I successfully fixed. You'll probably find my comments and "how's and why's" in the archives, but if you can't find them, I'll be glad to give you a detailed description of what I found and how I fixed it. Since then the boat is absolutely dry, as it should be! Again, welcome aboard, and have a Happy Holiday. Larry, The author of "Riddle of the Sands" tells a wonderful story of sailing his engineless boat from England to Germany; gets towed through the Kiel Canal and then sailas around Danish islands. On his way home he finds some interesting "doings" along the northern Dutch coast. This becomes "the riddle of the sands" The author later was running guns for the Irish Republican Army, got caught by the British and was executed. I read recently that his vessel was for sale in Ireland. If you can't find the book in your library, try ALIBRIS on the Internet. They specialize in old, out of print books. Todd, Richard Maury was 23 when he began the 3 year journey that became The Saga of Cimba. But it is obvious throughout the book that he had a lot of previous experience. He owned his first boat when he was 8 and by the time he was in his early twenties he had served before the mast on the full-rigged ship Tusitala. He spent most of his life as a deep water mariner and never completed another book. I have the sequel to Riddle of the Sands, but it is written by another author, Sam Llewellyn. It's The Shadow in the Sands and sounds good (Sam Llewellyn has written several good sailing books), but I haven't read it yet as I'm still trying to get a copy of Riddle of the Sands. Larry Y.

Stan, Excellent points about the different metals and lightning. I work in the utility industry and I know great, big, grown men who dive to the floor when a bug zapper goes off. Scary is too mild a term. I think I will practice dropping the mast just in case I ever have to. Stever R. You might use aluminum brackets available at a Lowes or Home Depot type store. Although your mast is already a great lightening rod, your lead would facilitate the flow more directly to your terminal block, presumably inside your cabin. You might look at interupting that flow with some kind of safety device and directing any stray voltage over the side. Hi Steve.. Welcome to the group!!! I had water in the area of te potty of my M-17. Traced it to rainwater seeping thru the windows and chainplates. caulking the windows and chainplates kept Stargazer dry. I tapes toilet paper undr the windows and chainplates, and the water showed up on the paper after the next rain. Just be sure to get there by the next day after the rain stops to get a good reading of where it's comong from. Newspaper will do as well. Mine came in on one side only, but do thru bolted places need caulking every few years. Harvey/Ga M-17 Stargazer #294
