[math-fun] Problem for John's son
Just a year ago, John was older than his son by 6 times, and now only by 5. How old is John now? -- Zak Seidov
the solution is ; s = son, f= father now +1 year s x/6 x/6 + 1 f x x + 1 by solving we get that the father was 24 year old, the son is 4 years old a year later, the father is 25 and the son is 5. Simon Plouffe ps : I missed something ? Le 2016-06-18 à 04:53, Zak Seidov via math-fun a écrit :

Depends on what is meant by "older than his son by 6 times." Simon apparently read it as the father is 6 times his son's age. I would have read it as, the amount that the father is older is 6 times ("by 6 times"), so the father is 7 times his son's age. In that case, the father was 35 and the son 5, then 36 and 6. Instead of solving yourselves suggest it to your son/grandson/grand-grandson ...:)
