[math-fun] equations in websites and email
I occasionally run into something like this: $$(a + b)^{3} = a^{3} + 3a^{2}b + 3ab^{2} + b^{3}$$ I vaguely recognize as being TeX math-mode or something like that. Is there a way to *see* the equation if you get one in an email or run into on a web site? Thanks /Bernie\ NB: this is all easy but the ones i run into with integrals and summaitions and matrices and such are very hard [for me] to parse Bernie Cosell bernie@fantasyfarm.com -- Too many people; too few sheep --
One way: feeding to Wolfram Alpha. For example, https://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=%5Csum_%7Bk%3D0%7D%5E%5Cinfty+%28%5Cbi... On 6/23/20 15:38, Bernie Cosell wrote:

There is this bookmarklet, but it relies on the website not setting a content security policy (so it won't work in gmail, for instance). https://checkmyworking.com/misc/mathjax-bookmarklet/ On Tue, Jun 23, 2020 at 4:52 PM Mike Stay <metaweta@gmail.com> wrote:

oh wow -- it worked!! I made a bookmark of the bookmarklet, and when I enabled scripts on the page[*] I was looking at i didn't have to do anything with the bookmarklet at all.. all the ugly stuff disappeared, replaced with pretty equations. [*] my default is to block scripts everywhere and only enable them when I need them or on sites that I trust THANKS /bernie\ Bernie Cosell bernie@fantasyfarm.com -- Too many people; too few sheep --
Oh! Yeah, any page with $$math$$ in it probably already uses MathJax, so turning on scripts will let it run. Congrats! On Tue, Jun 23, 2020 at 5:12 PM Bernie Cosell <bernie@fantasyfarm.com> wrote:

Bernie, There is a little program called LaTexIt LaTeXiT for Mac: Free Download + Review [Latest Version] www.macupdate.com › Business › Presentation Tools <https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/17889/latexit> <https://www.google.com/search?ei=tinyXsWCBZ21ytMP382viA4&q=latexit&oq=latexit&gs_lcp=CgZwc3ktYWIQAzICCAAyBAgAEAoyAggAMgIIADICCAAyBAgAEAoyBAgAEAoyAggAMgQIABAKMgIIADoECAAQRzoFCAAQkQI6BQgAEIMBOgUIABCxAzoECAAQQzoHCAAQsQMQQ1CCzqESWJDaoRJgqN6hEmgAcAR4AIABRogBgQOSAQE3mAEAoAEBqgEHZ3dzLXdpeg&sclient=psy-ab&ved=0ahUKEwjFtdrnqZjqAhWdmnIEHd_mC-EQ4dUDCAw&uact=5#> 1. <https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Ii5xUTpKB4wJ:https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/17889/latexit+&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us> Apr 21, 2020 - LaTeXiT is a small utility that allows you to quickly typeset LaTeX equations, without bothering with file creation, preambles, and so on. The PDF image obtained can then be exported by drag'n drop to any application supporting it. You give it a line or more of latex like that in your example, and it produces a nicely-formatted version of the formula I use it all the time when I'm preparing a slide for a talk and I want to insert a formula - I use Latexit to produce a pdf image which can then be dragged into the slide On Tue, Jun 23, 2020 at 7:44 PM Mike Stay <metaweta@gmail.com> wrote:

For the cases where my bookmarklet doesn't work, I also made a thing you can just paste TeX into and have it rendered: https://checkmyworking.com/misc/makebigmaths/ On Wed, 24 Jun 2020, 04:00 Neil Sloane, <njasloane@gmail.com> wrote:

I am annoyed by equations in Mathematica. I won't waste my time attempting to decipher the obscure syntax and semantics. I simply ignore such equations, and just move on. -- Gene On Tuesday, June 23, 2020, 3:39:16 PM PDT, Bernie Cosell <bernie@fantasyfarm.com> wrote: I occasionally run into something like this: $$(a + b)^{3} = a^{3} + 3a^{2}b + 3ab^{2} + b^{3}$$ I vaguely recognize as being TeX math-mode or something like that.
