I left out the fact that, of course, no matter what g and h are there are always maps M_g —> M_h taking all of M_g to a single point. (And maps that are continuously deformable to a single point.) —Dan I wrote: ----- If g ≥ h then there is always a continuous map M_g —> M_h. -----
