RE: [math-fun] Erdos-Bacon number
It's a dubious distinction, but my Fischer number is 2. The intermediary is a friend from high school days, Kate Sillars, who managed to spring an opening surprise on him in a simultaneous exhibition. This would likely translate into a Morphy number of 6 or 7. There are also Morphy numbers - chessmaster Paul Morphy had Morphy Number 0. If you played a game with Morphy, you have Morphy number 1, etc. The sum of Erdos number and Morphy number was discussed on a chess newsgroup about a year ago.

What's my Morphy number? I once took part in a simultaneous display with Harry Golombek (he was also my Editor when I ran the Endgames section of the British Chess Magazine, 1947--51) and I drew with Sir Geo Thomas in a simultaneous display much earlier. Have also played with Bernard Scott (ne Schultz), Sargeant(sp?), and several even more eminent players - Bernstein, Charlesworth, Truscott(?)) in Nottingham 1946. Also Kitto & Schultz (my daughter's father-in-law, against whom I have 100% record) when we were undergrads. Joint games are rather more numerous than joint papers! R. I don't know enough of the history to know, and I don't know a good compilation of Morphy numbers. Probably about 4.
