[math-fun] One thousand paintings
Here's your chance to own your favorite number, unless of course, someone already does. http://www.onethousandpaintings.com/home/ Kerry -- lkmitch@gmail.com www.fractalus.com/kerry
Hello, Is this supposed to be interesting or funny? Is this some kind of a scam this thing ? I don't find this funny, naive people will pay 500$ to have that silly thing. For me it is like those phone scams where they call old people to take their money, it is like paying 10$ to have a pet rock. This is a personal opinion : it has no place here on math-fun. Hello Simon, Is this supposed to be interesting or funny?

Neither funny nor a scam, but I think it's mildly interesting, in part because of its use of numbers as the subjects of the works and in small part because of the algorithmic nature of the valuation. Also, I find it interesting in part because I'm also an artist whose work has numeric content. This is a personal opinion : it has no place here on math-fun. If I were advocating this artist of the work, I would agree. But the nature of the list seems to be that things that aren't strictly math, but have math aspects or facets, are allowed, such as codes in numbers that were posted on Craigslist, or the death of the first hacker. If I am mistaken, then I apologize. No offense was intended. Simon Plouffe Kerry -- lkmitch@gmail.com www.fractalus.com/kerry

Reminds me of the wall paintings by Bernar Venet of commutative diagrams and other visually interesting math blown up to a grand scale. Not particularly numeric, but of mathematical origin. You can see examples in an article by Karl Hofmann in the Notices of the AMS a few years ago.. which may be found here: http://www.math.uiuc.edu/~snapp/comm-hofmann.pdf
