When you delve into any human endeavor, repeatedly asking "why" to uncover the ultimate application, you invariably end up at "to make life better." For the non-mathematician, it is a lengthy route from math to a better life: math leads to physics which leads to computers which leads to ... which leads to a better life. For the mathematician, though, the route is short: mathematics leads to enjoyment which leads to a better life.
