Re: Kraftwerk digest, Vol 1 #101 - 17 msgs
Any chance you could break that 300M .mpg file into smaller chunks for those of us without large hard disks to peruse either as a download from The Group or possibly 'Streaming'? I'm sure, even though, many of us on the list don't speak the language, we'd still like to view it - then maybe one of us who _does_ speak the language could post their translation as best as they can... ...just a thought/request... Hello fellow Kraftwerk fans
Despite having been a Kraftwerk fan for the best part of my life, I somehow haven't found this list until now.
I'm Swedish by birth but live in England, and a few days ago I heard from a friend in Sweden that there had been a special 30-minute program on Kraftwerk on Swedish TV (which I saw was briefly discussed here). I've now finally got hold of a copy of the program and I would just like to say that I thought it was a very well-made program. Not much in the way of new info, unsurprisingly, even though the interviews with Wolfgang and Karl were obviously specially made for the program and very interesting. Wolfgang gave a much better impression on camera than he did in his book...
What really impressed me was that they had everyone from Stockhausen to Björk to Peter Saville (one of the best designers of all time) commenting on Kraftwerk. Peter Saville was saying that Kraftwerk's imagery and design was by far the most important influence for his groundbreaking work with Factory. It seemed they had interviewed a fair number of people for this, just a shame we didn't get to hear more from them.
Also included was the footage from, I think, the Showroom Dummies video (correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't managed to get hold of this video) where Kraftwerk is dancing. What a great sight! :)
If anyone's interested, I've got the program as an MPEG (300MB though).
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking part in this list as I still take a very active interest in all things Kraftwerk. And please just shout at me if I bring anything up which has already been discussed to death and I'll shut up.
Cheers, Erik

I could do that, or convert it to divx, which gives a smaller file size but isn't as portable. I don't have anywhere to host it either way though. -- /* Soleil */

I *think* it already is in divx, don't know for sure as I didn't convert it myself. Thanks for offering to split it up, I've never really worked with video and don't have the software for these sort of things. Thanks, Erik

I'm serving a DivX5 encoded version now (178 MB), http://amiga.medicinareberget.studenthem.gu.se:8080/kraftwerk/ I also translated what was said in Swedish and German to English, so you'll find some subtitle files in various formats in the same directory. They're "human readable" too, if you don't have a player that can use subtitle files. If any of you have a somewhat more generally compatible DivX4 file (unfortunately I couldn't get my "old" encoders to work), please consider uploading it to ftp://amiga.medicinareberget.studenthem.gu.se:10000/uploads/ I won't serve split files as well since I'm afraid I'm running short on diskspace (this is my personal computer) and I still want to serve the full files to minimise hassle for everybody else. If you need split files that's easier solved on the client side, I believe some download managers, wget and similar utilities allows you to specify byte ranges to get. Try telneting to port 10000 and send HTTP commands directly if you're a total nerd... ;) -- E m a n u e l M a i r ________________________________________ e@mair.com mair@medstud.gu.se Procul, o procul este, profani! http://medstud.gu.se/~mair * t e a m A M I G A * .-. .- -.. .. --- -....- .- -.- - .. ...- .. - .-.- - ...-.-

The video is primarily English, with Swedish subtitles (luckily it wasn't dubbed!). The exceptions to that are the intro and outro, delivered by the Swedish hosts. All the real juicy stuff (Karl, Wolfgang, Bjork, Moby, etc.) is in English. Does anyone else think the video makes Stockhausen look a little silly? He's talking about the importance of Kraftwerk, but then doesn't recognize Autobahn!?! Perhaps I simply misunderstand what's going on in that portion of the show. -Eric

Well, I don't think Stockhausen considers Kraftwerk that important, they're probably just a pop band with some interesting ideas to him. Which is why he didn't recognise Autobahn in the first 5 seconds. I mean, he was told what it was pretty much before the music had started... I'm sure he'd have got it if he'd given it a slightly longer listen. Erik
Gary Numan had staying power for awhile trumpeting Kraftwerk-like electronica. Has anybody checked out "The Glass House" on his recent "Alternative Anthology?" Esoteric, electronic, Hutter style rhythms... amir http://www.slystone.com Erik Jälevik wrote:
