I mentioned Joe Meek on this list a few years ago, and the similarities with his desire for exploring new sounds and recording techniques. Some of his music with the Tornados was considered quite unique. Tracks recorded by the Tornados include 'Telstar' (first English artists to have a number one in the US), Early Bird (another tune to celebrate the launch of the Early Bird satellite), Robot, plus many others with a space theme. Off topic from Kraftwerk, but on topic for Joe Meek: The Tornados original drummer turned down an invitation to be the first drummer for Led Zeppelin; Another member of a later incarnation of the Tornados was Ritchie Blackmore...
