Stockhausen has never been very interested in pop music, although recently some journalist had the silly idea to send him some recordings by techno artists to ask him what advice he could give to his "younger colleagues". As you would expect, the advice was always something like: "Stop using these regular rhythms" and "Stop using these conventional major/minor harmonies", which of course for pop musicians comes close to saying: "Stop making music altogether"!
*LOL* ;-))) i really wonder , if any of those silly journalists ever had the idea to send him some "stuff" by autechre or funkstörung & their likes ??? *G+* ;-) somethin' that's surely VERY_FAR from bein' "repetitive" in rhythm & its overall structure !!! *BWG* ;-)))
Not exactly "recently", but Radio 3 sent Stockhausen Aphex Twin, Plasticman, Scanner and Daniel Pemberton in 1995. http://www.andreas.de/aphextwin/articles/interview2.html has an interview about what he thought of the music. He thinks Richard D. James would revolutionize his sound if he listened to "Song of the Youth". I happen to know for a fact that Aphex *already* knew that record in 1995, and it's one of his favorites. So much for revolutionizing his sound. Stockhausen's main problem with pop music seems to be the same problem some of us have with his music. Why we listen to music, and what we expect from it, is completely different. -Eric
