Hi, I had an interesting chat recently, discussing personal Top 5 lists for dance albums, and since we are running out of KLF topics at the moment... What would be YOUR personal Top 5 (dance) albums ? Releases that you can listen to from the first to the last track without skipping any song ? And, most interesting question why these ? I´m curious about your answers. Maybe some of us will find new material to listen to, that fills their players and influences them in one way or the other. My latest bought album did, definitively. cy@ Thomas

Interesting topic, I like to join :-)

In random order my Top5 albums right now: Moby: Everything is wrong - Non-Stop DJ Mix by Evil Ninja Moby: Two disks, one more old school techno/anthems/ambience, the other disc is hard house/acid/trance. This double CD box shows what Moby did back in his 'rave' years. I heard a lot of those tracks when I went to my first raves in the beginning of the 90ies and it's simply great to see how simple and sometime how naive those tracks are. But I still like most of the tracks very much, they were important for techno. Just listened to both of the CD's without a break last saturday. KLF - The White Room: Well, still one of my favourites. I don't have to mention that the guys where ahead of it's time I guess :-)) This album was what made me addicted to electronic music and in my opinion nothing ever bypassed it so far. I think if I listen to the CD I do it without skipping a single song. I listen to it like this since I have the CDI guess. The Prodigy - Experience Another classical techno album. I also like the new stuff of Prodigy but the first album is my favourite of what they did. Simply because it's very powerful music that made me dance every time I heard it at raves. The Chemical Brothers - exit planet dust The first album of the two guys, the track "One Too Many Mornings" still touches my soul when I listen to it. Big beat as it should be but also very calm tracks with great arrangements. Space Night Volume II up to the latest one Not sure if people who don't live in the german speaking part of europe know this stuff. SpaceNight is a very famous ChillOut broadcast on a german TV channel called B3 (Bayern 3). They started to broadcast chilly music (trip hop and easy electronic beats) in the 90ies and the pictures are snippets from NASA and other space archives out there. It got very famuous in the German, Swiss and Austrian rave scene, I can't remember on how many raves they had SpaceNight on TV-Screens. For each season they release(d) a double CD box with some very nice tracks on it, one of my all time favourites ist Sven Väths "Schubdüse". This music is on air when I have friends in the house who are not that much in electronic music, in most cases they like it very much and you can listen to this kind of music for hours. over and out Adrian -- Adrian Gschwend @ OS/2 Netlabs ICQ: 22419590 ktk@netlabs.org ------- The OS/2 OpenSource Project: http://www.netlabs.org
Maybe I should have included my own Top 5 as well... in no particular order. Sunscreem - Looking at you (The Club Anthems) Might be just an album of remixes, but for me it´s one of the better examples of what a skilled remixer can make out of an already wonderful original track. Lucia Holm´s nice voice fits perfectly with the music, and with featured remixers like Rollo, Jimmy Gomez and others, you get a wide variety of styles. Leftfield - Leftism My latest addition, and even if I´m years behind, this album blows anything else away. Hard and fast dance tracks (Open Up) on the one, nice slow and almost ambient synth interludes (Melt) on the other hand turn this album into one of my Top 5 CDs. Psykosonik - Unlearn Far more professional than their first release, Daniel Lenz and his friends came up with their album "Unlearn" that also moves on the edge between dance and ambient music, while they set their focus on slower electronic music. The Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust I don´t know why, but they managed to get worse with every album. Nevertheless, their first record is so rough and still so powerful, you got to listen to it. That kind of music that makes you go faster on the motorway. Enimga - LoveSensualityDevotion (The Remixes) Yet another remix album, but this time meshing two quite different worlds together, resulting in a beautiful mix of voices, chants and melodies. You don´t need to be an Enigma fan to listen to these over and over again. Curious for the next 5...
Hi all, My Top Five Dance/Techno/Electronic albums KLF - The White Room No explanations required here. Yello - 1980-1985: The New Mix In One Go Good remixes, and not as cheesy as the "Hands on Yello" album. (Though if anybody has a spare copy of the ultra rare DOUBLE CD version of Hands on Yello, send me a message.) As far as regular albums by Yello go, "Baby" is the best for listening to from start to finish. Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene Really hard to place one of his albums above all others. Sure he's written a few duds tracks here and there, but on some albums every track is a corker. Oxygen gets the prize for sentimental reasons. Third Eye - Third Eye Don't know how many non-Aussie on the list will know this one. Third Eye is basically Ollie Olsen, who was the talented half of "Max Q" along with Michael Hutchens. A really strong electronic/techno album, and Olsen's cover of "The Real Thing" is a thing of beauty. Trance Atlantic Airwaves - The Energy of Sound Michel Cretu (of Enigma fame) doing covers of electronic/techno classics like "Axel F", "Crockett's Theme" and "Magic Fly". Do I really have to stop at just 5?? Honourable mentions: Utah Saints - Utah Saints, Shamen - Boss Drum, Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells II, Information Society - Hack, The Art of Noise - The Best of The Art Of Noise (Artworks 12"), and Two Unlimited - Get Ready (for pure cheesiness!) Michael
My Top Five (or six!) Dance/Techno/Electronic albums
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon - this is the original electronic album, if it is not in your collection you are wasting your life and not properly utilizing whatever sound system you have. 29 years old and still groundbreaking in many ways. On the run is an absolute adrenalin rush for any fan of analog synths and electronic music. Doubting Thomas - The Infidel - basically everything that I ever liked about Skinny Puppy in a sampladelic, groove oriented package. moody with catchy beats that you will not be able to leave alone Orbital - 2 - from the intro (time becomes a loop) to the final whisper, this is a damned fine album. The first truly intelligent dance record that I'd ever heard. not a weak moment on the album Future Sound of London - ISDN - a compilation of live performances but without a doubt one of my absolute favorites, intelligent catchy and non-traditional. FSOL rocks my world. The Orb - Adventures beyond the Ultraworld - journey music of the finest calibre, inner exploration meshing with interstellar travel. how can you not like it??? Fluke - Risotto - probably the one of the best records in my collection extremely dancable and intelligent, just the way i like it and there ya go. this list could have stretched to 50, there are so many good albums out there. These are essential, don't cheat yourselves. Also, check out Single Cell Orchestras album called Dead Vent Seven. MMMMMMMMMMM Tasty! lysergic ********** Experimental Ambient Bliss! ********** The Lysergic Dream - Cult of the Dying Streetlamp The new album out NOW!!! on Uncle Buzz Records Sound Samples at http://www.zombieproject.com/lysergic
Mine are these in no special order: 1: Cabaret Voltaire - The Conversation (1994) I think that it is a complete thought. It has a definite starting point and a finish. Richard H Kirk out did himself on this album. Nice melodies that is very different from their other works. Not as beat oriented. 2: Monaco - Music For Pleasure (1997) Peter Hook.....Nuff said!!!! 3: KLF - Chill Out (1990) The best experimental and atmospheric album. A seminal work among trance and the likes. It started a big trend in that genera. I used to live in Beaumont Texas. I went to collage there and graduated from Lamar University located there. 4: Hybrid - Wider/Wide Angle (2000) It is an awesome album in the break beat genera. Very good melodies and catching rhythms. They also do nice remixes. 5: Moodswings - Moodfood (1992), Phychedlicatessen (1997), Horizontal (2002) These albums are somewhat reminiscent of Chill out. I had Moodfood around the same time that I picked up Chill Out and I loved them both with the entrancing melodies and beats. The second album had a different feel to it, but good non-the less. And Horizontal, You should get the album. It has such lush soundscapes like Chill Out Very Very Kickass album!!! It would take me too long to work out my top 5, in fact I wouldn't know where to start... So hereÂs the last 5 IÂve listened to: On now: Death In Vegas - The Contino Sessions Fantastic dirty beats in a Chemicals/Primals/concrete mixer type incident. Can't wait for the new album. This morning: Moby  Everything Is Wrong Cos it has been in my CD player, waking me up for the last few days! Like someone else said earlier, there are some classics on there, but a little cheesy at times! (Mine isn't the DJ mix version  I may have to search for that one!) Yesterday: DJ Shadow - The Private Press Cos I bought it yesterday! After a couple of listens, I'm fairly impressed with it. Time will tell if I rank it up there with Entroducing. Similar style to his first album. Unfortunately the 2 disc version is only available on import and I couldnÂt wait 4-6 weeks for it, so went with the single disc... & X-Press-2  Muzikizum Also bought yesterday! IÂve got a few of their old 12"s but I hadnÂt heard anything from them for ages, until I heard the trak with David Byrne  Lazy. After only one listen, I think that along with Lazy, there are a few other outstanding tracks but the rest are fairly ordinary. It's one of those albums that I'll probably listen to quite a lot over the next couple of months, then will relegate it to the bottom of the pile and pull out in a years time. But time will tell ;-) Saturday Aphex Twin  Selected Ambient Works (the first one, can't remember the years!) I was so nervous on Saturday afternoon, before the England game that I needed something soothing to calm me down. Worked a treat ;-D Probably my favourite Aphex album and if I did spend a couple of days thinking about my top 5, this may well get a look in. I don't really know where to start with this one... When I got it, it totally blew me away. I'd heard his Peel session before getting SAW, but it didn't prepare me for it. I think Richard has been one of the few genuinely innovative people in music (esp dance) over the last 10 years or so. I've got most of his releases (collection rivalling my KLF collection!) and the majority are fantastic, but the more recent ones are a little hard to listen to... The man is a genius and we beat the Danes! Bring on Brazil! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hmmm...not easy to choose 5! Here we go: Prodigy: The Fat of the Land This still is one of my all-time faves, standing out of all the usual big beat records and like Bill already said in '45' Liam's got the sounds that hit you straight in the face. The album has highs and lows (musically seen) and is very good for longer journeys with your car. Killer track here: NARAYAN. Trance Atlantic Air Waves: The Energy of Sound Simply great done! I liked all these synth tracks before but now even more! Every song a great arrangement with huge sounds. Michael Cretu beats 'em all! Killer tracks: LUCIFER & AXEL F. The KLF: The White Room OST What do I have to say? For me it's like heaven. Over and over again. Nothing else to say! Favourite track: GO TO SLEEP! ATB: Two Worlds A 2-CD album, one side dance, one side ambient. Nice melodies, good grooves, all in all a very good record. For those who don't know ATB - give it a listen, especially ENIGMATIC ENCOUNTER... Mauro Picotto: The Triple Album This time it gets harder somehow. Three CDs, one Techno-Trance record, one again ambient and one non-stop-DJ-mix. On the first CD you get all the hits plus a lot of harder tracks that 99% of the usual charts-people will NOT like IMHO. The second disc is very special as it introduced a softer side of Mr. Picotto to you - you recognize the singles here and there but the versions are sometimes even better... And the DJ mix is purely for dancing you head off - Fave tracks: VERDI and KEBAB. If you haven't listened to all of these please do it! :)) Dan
What would be YOUR personal Top 5 (dance) albums ? Releases that you can listen to from the first to the last track without skipping any song ?
Excellent stuff. Ok Top 5 "dance" albums of all time, in no particular order: The KLF - Chill Out (KLF Communications) Still a unique record. We all know about how good it is. DJ Shadow - Endtroducing (Mo'Wax) Just a sublime record. Every time I listen to it, it surprises me again, and I keep finding new things in it. It brings a wonderful emotional richness, despite the fact that it's built up of samples. It's just wonderful! Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman (JBO) All Underworld's albums are amazing. I just picked this one cos it's got Dark & Long, Cowgirl and Dirty Epic on it, which are all just perfect. Boards Of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children (Warp) Great twisted electronica. Does it count as dance? Not sure, but it's still great. Their latest album, Geogaddi, is superb as well, but Music is a permanent favourite. Chilled, but not purposefully so. Various Artists - Mastercuts Classic House 1 Not a studio album, granted, but certainly my favourite compilation. Loads of classic Chicago house tracks that started it all off. Someday, It's Alright, Promised Land. Just great, soulful house. Every one's a winner. Can't recommend them enough. Del ----------------------------------- Derek Knight djnite@klf-communications.com
Ok, I SHOULD be in bed now, but I couldn't resist this. My top 5 dance albums are : 1. Voodoo Child - The End Of Everything - Moby goes for mellow trance in a fantastic way 2. Kraftwerk - Electric Cafe (German version) - Everybody's gotta have a Kraftwerk CD in there haven't they? 3.Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman 4. New Order - Technique 5. KLF - Chill Out. Right. most of my favourites have been mentioned already (there seems to be a general consensus on a few classic albums, and several of the recurring ones are debut albums ...) in no particular order: klf - chill out orb - adventures beyond the ultraworld massive attack - blue lines or mezzanine (don't ask me to decide) underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman (great as the others are, this rules) orbital - anything except snivilisation (and maybe the alltogether) dj shadow - endtroducing TEXtures leftfield - leftism oh crap, i have to stop at 5... but that ignores aphex, fsol, coldcut/dj food, FSUK3 (GREAT hiphop mix album), anything by adam freeland, 2 lone swordsmen, system7, banco de gaia, DIV, chem bros, mr scruff ... aaaargh! i hate top 5 lists - my answers change from day to day (though most of the 8 albums above will always be near the top) I'm reading High Fidelity at the moment and like the top 5 lists they come up with in the book because they're quite specific and easier to answer, such as "Top 5 songs that are track one on side one" -- "Nothing is true. Everything is permissible." - Hassan i Sabbah
hi all, Couldnt resist either commenting either. i actually found it really difficult to choose. so rule 1 was no various artists (that made it a lot simpler). rule 2 was dance (or mostly) only. Albums prodigy - music for the jilted PWEI - the album that starts with the american? preacher intro to dance of the mad (cant remember the title and I actually only own a best of pwei cd). messiah - 21st century jesus. moby - evrything is wrong klf - white room Reasons Prodigy - standard reasons most likely PWEI - definetly dance, and i like most their stuff. that intro decides it though. Messiah - not the best album ever, but its all the one artist, and most songs were released and i danced to them at the time. moby - not all dance but mostly i guess. klf - well it is a klf list after all. did you think i'd not pick it? top contenders for dance albums. mostly got cut cos i couldnt happily call them dance albums. klf - chillout orb - ever growing pulsating brain faithless - any album/remix album beloved - blissed out (remixes of 1st? album) third eye - third eye itch-e & scratch-e - itch-e kitch-e koo cheers brendan

Hey Mike (and the others as well), the CD was released in Belgium by Indisc, you can get the number from the discography. It's the only CD that was ever available, you're right there... And rare as hell!!! I've seen Pure Trance 6, Kylie CD, Space CD, Choc Ice's 2+3 but NEVER the D2000 CD... Cheers, Dan --- a.k.a. Oh look it's the "which version of BT's album is better?" argument. That seems to have cropped up on almost every music list I've been on on the 'Net... let's try not to break into that argument here?... As it happens, of my top 5: Utah Saints "Two" Sunscreem "Change Or Die" The KLF "The White Room" BT "Movement In Still Life" Hybrid "Wide Angle" *All* of them have been released in the UK and US with different tracklistings. While the Sunscreem one just has bonus tracks in the US, the other four were all re-arranged or changed in some way. It's not something I gripe or moan about as it gives me different ways to listen to the same albums... and it's not as if I was conned into buying two copies when I only wanted one, as I have at least four copies of all of the above albums... Irrelevantly, thinking about it, I'd probably drop "Wide Angle" off my top 5 and replace it either with Arkarna's "Fresh Meat", which had the same tracklisting all over the world, or Arkarna's "Family Album", which didn't. ah, don't get excited. i'm not enough of a BT fan to care whether or not somebody prefers one over the other. there's only one album of his i like enough to listen to whole way through, anyways, and it's not this one.
*All* of them have been released in the UK and US with different tracklistings. While the Sunscreem one just has bonus tracks in the US, the other four were all re-arranged or changed in some way.
sunscreem quickly fell out of favour with me...i loved their first album, but then heard two later singles ("looking at you" and something else) and was really quite turned off.

nope, i tend not to gripe about it either. i just found it odd how drastically different the two albums were, that's all. oh, and i never posted my top 5 here, but a) i couldn't begin to decide and b) it seems i have quite different taste than most of you. : sig : micah stupak international bright young kook laerm@soulfood.org : quote : i will show another me
