"The White Room OST" original art work?
Hi, everyone. A few questions and replies. Firstly, please can someone tell me how to change my settings so I receive individual e-mails rather than a digest? Not being able to reply until a digest comes in is a bit annoying. Secondly, a thought: has anyone even seen original artwork for JAMSLP/CD4 "The White Room Soundtrack"? An approximation, based on the KSTJ CD single, appeared in 1996 - but has anyone seen any original KLF artwork from 1989? Since sleeves for Pure Trances 3, 4 and 5 are available - why not the pre-"What Time is Love Story" JAMSLP4? I remember once asking about the strange, cartoon-like lettering that appears on the back of Pure Trance sleeves saying "taken from the motion picture (cartoon writing) THE WHITE ROOM" and I wondered if the sleeve would have been based on that? Also, would it have been day-glo green and pink, like the real JAMSLP/CD4? And replies (a) Ourwebstuff: as far as I'm aware, the sessions were recorded on Kiss FM in 1989, and were also something to do with Coldcut (?) Presumably, Bill, Jimmy and Alex were on Kiss FM around that time (hence, the Orb's "Kiss" EP) and this was the result. I think two of the tracks were made available on CD as part of an interview booklet - and another might have been made available as "The Orb" track (which is just called "The Orb", with no artist - or not title) on the CD of "Eternity Project One". (b) Andy: as far as I'm aware the 1992 "J & A" cover is not part of the Kompetition. Are you maybe thinking of the Atomic Kitten sample? John
I have the Orb vs. Coldcut tracks. They are very long and big. I would strongly suspect that the artwork would have been very similar to that of Kylie Said to Jason single and not at all like the day glo Pure Trance series. cheers -- Stuart Young, Michelle Ardern & Felix Ardern-Young (3) Live at: 42B, Sefton Ave, Grey Lynn, Auckland, NZ Phone: +64 (0)9 376 8100 say.map@ihug.co.nz Graphic and Web design, Web development and hosting: http://www.pixelandgrain.co.nz/ Stuey's personal website - a cobweb site: http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~stuey/ Any views expressed in this email are those of the author and not of any of the organisations we are involved with.
I agree with Stu. Production wise I don't think it got beyond a demo tape but I suspect it would have been Kylie like in appearance. I took this as the inspiration for the DVD cover I made (which incidently John wote the blurb for). I never saw anything hanging around Rough Trade or Appearing. I think the non chart sucess of KSTJ was such a downer they shelved any related projects. The reboot of the project resulted in the Stadium house stuff we all know and love. Don't forget they were skint when Kylie bombed. KLF communications at that time was just Bill & Jim, there were no "staff" until Last Train took off. I have a tape of the White Room OST I got in the early 90s which has an illustration I >>haven't seen elsewhere...basically the 'Why Sheep' picture on the inner sleeve of the >>eventual commercial release of the White Room, but in a more caricature, kinda >>comic-drawing style which I guess would be kind of in keeping with the 'taken from the >>White Room OST' scrawl on the Pure Trance singles you mentioned John. It's quite a >>neat pic that i was intending to use for a compilation some time but could perhaps be >>combined with the aformentioned scribble to make a new 'cover' for the OST.
I can upload the image somewhere if there is enough interest. It could also combine >>well with the 'Deep Shit' illustrations in Pete Robinson's book ('Rockman shows >>Kingboy the way' etc)

Interesting stuff. I knew of the Orb vs Coldcut KISS FM session, part of which appears >>on the Orb Anthology 2 CD but didn't know the Alex vs the KLF tracks had any Kiss >>connection. These also seem to overlap...as well as 'Brooklyn New York' I can >>remember offhand Alex vs the KLF 1 & 2 (and possibly a longer version which includes >>both) and 'Borrowed Love (KLF Slow the Beats)'...i seem to remember one of these, >>the latter i think, being essentially the same as the 'Orb' track on EP1 you mentioned >>John, though i could well be wrong...I don't have the tracks to hand right now to check.
