Well, there I was browsing E-bay for rare KLF stuff, and I see someone selling the Space CD (not me, I hasten to add, so this isn't a self advertisement): http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2565838103&category=999 1 Anyway, he mentions that the CD case is broken on the item he's selling, so he was going to find a new case for it, but he noticed that on the backholder was the name 'SPACE' in mirrored writing, as thus http://i7.ebayimg.com/03/i/00/c8/40/8a_1_s.JPG Well, I've looked at my CD, and it's exactly the same! So, maybe this is a good way of finding out if you own the original or the bootleg? Does anyone out there who's got a bootleg copy of 'Space' on CD still have 'SPACE' backwards on that bit of plastic? You learn something new every day! L8rs, Nick ;-)
i was about to say something like "ah, it must just be a time / exposure to light effect". until i checked my "space" cd which has it too... ...and after checking 10-20 cds from around that time period, the only other one with a similar effect was: "chill out" ...so you should all go and check that cd too. weird. ;-) --- Smiley
My UK Chill Out does not have this - and I bought it direct from KLF Comm. by mail order back in the early 90s. Yes you're probably right. If the CDs were stacked in their brown/black trays, then the top surface of the CD with the SPACE logo would be in direct contact with the back of the tray above it. If they were like this for sometime before being clipped into the outer jewel case then the ink in the word SPACE could have reacted with the plastic in the tray above. It just depends how long they were stored like this as to whether you get the image or not I guess. Checked my collection of confirmed genuine Chill Outs on CD, results as follows: UK (with 'file under ambient' sticker) - image appears UK (w/o 'file under ambient' sticker) - no image EU (Indisc/JAMSCD89005) - no image US (TVT7155) - no image Also checked my UK JAMSCD4 just in case but there's nothing on that. What I did notice is that the insert with the 'image' on is has a smooth back, whereas all the others have rougher backs. Interestingly, the image that does appear is identical to the CD layout so, as Mark suggests, if the CDs were put into the grey inserts, then all stacked closely together, maybe the ink transferred/corroded the plastic slightly? Cool nonetheless. Ah, trainspotting, is there anything better? ;-) Chris
