Hi I've just pulled out a CD that I've not seen in ages. 808 State - 88:98 Ten Years of 808 State (originally I only bought the CD for one track - Pacific - but found quite a number of the tracks are really good! I heard Pacific being played at a laser light Millennium Light Show at Liverpool, after finding out who did it I went and bought the CD) Whilst listening to one track today I realised there was a sample in there from The KLF (well either The KLF sampled it from 808 State or 808 State sampled it from The KLF) The track is The Only Rhyme That Bites. I am quite sure it's in Last Train To Trancentral. (it's the violin bit) Anyone else know this, and is it the KLF sampling 808 or 808 sampling KLF (or just that The KLF played with there 808 and managed to get the same tune out of it?) Also did The KLF have anything to do with 808 State, I notice a couple of similarities here 1. Both started in 1987 (808 State were formed in 1987 even though there album is 1988!) 2. 808 mention in the album inlay they did some stuff round Lancashire wharehouses and The KLF mention about the underground raves in the North (It's Grim Up North lists all the places they had these underground raves) 3. 808 sampled some stuff like The KLF - Bjork, UB40 4. 808 used an 808, on the White Room the credits mention an 808. 5. For track 5 on the CD (The Only Rhyme That Bites m- the one with The KLF sample on it), this was released by Warner Chappell music - The KLF released all there work under the logo KLF Communications - A division of Warner Chappell. and finally both brought a new sound to the world - the sound of House!
Nah... the violins are REALLY different. Just compare: http://www.trancentral.ru/05_sounds/temp_808.mp3 (150kb) http://www.trancentral.ru/05_sounds/temp_lttt.mp3 (300kb) And as far as I remember 808 guys didn't sample Bjork. They worked with her full time like KLF & Tammy. On page 4 of bm cd inlay she is credited as 'willing contempopary' :) --- darrenforster99@ntlworld.com wrote:

You are right, and what is more, it makes me think that Atomic Kitten sampled 808 State for the violins in "I Want Your Love", not the KLF as I had thought. (Though they obviously sampled Ricardo too.) Does anybody (gasp, choke) *own* the Atomic Kitten album to check the credits? Michael

No, they didn't. The melody is an traditional one. If I remember right the song is called "big country"... kubi
btw, my favourite 808 track is 'Bond' - it's like KLF+Skinny Puppy+Fall. It's fabulous.

Not really that much. Are you sure they are different? Maybe I'll find 808 States e-mail address and ask them to make sure! :) On 6 Jul 2002 at 7:56, EelLeech Mikhail wrote:

Just got this reply back from 808 State The only rhyme that bites uses a sample from big country, but I don't reckon its sampled on Last Train....could be wrong though. Not sure which came out first actually, I think The Only ryhme... was released first. On 7 Jul 2002 at 10:34, darrenforster99@ntlworld.com wrote:

Nope.
1. Both started in 1987 (808 State were formed in 1987 even though there album is 1988!)
Very true, check out the 'Let Yourself Go' single!
2. 808 mention in the album inlay they did some stuff round Lancashire wharehouses and The KLF mention about the underground raves in the North (It's Grim Up North lists all the places they had these underground raves)
They were Mancunian after all (from Manchester in Lancashire)!
3. 808 sampled some stuff like The KLF - Bjork, UB40
808 never sampled the KLF, but the KLF did sample 'Tunes Hit The Atom' on '3AM Eternal' (the mobile phone bit!): "In September 1990, a second MC Tunes versus 808 State single, 'Tunes Splits The Atom', was released, which again made the Top 20. Unusually for a dance track at that time, the backing featured live drums, courtesy of Phil Kirby. Easier for sharp-eared fans to spot was KLF's use of the computer-style bleeps that underpinned 'Tunes Splits The Atom', on their No. 1 hit '3 a.m. Eternal'. "We aren't going to prosecute anyone", pledged Massey, despite the fact that others had not been quite so forgiving when they'd been sampled by 808 State. In June 1990, for instance, the group encountered problems with their first collaboration with Tunes. Martin Price told 'Melody Maker': "It' s reached the ridiculous point where they're demanding 50% of the royalties from 'The Only Rhyme That Bites' because of the sample from 'The Big Country '." And when the outfit were in the charts with 'Tunes Splits The Atom', the sampling curse struck again: "When you enter the Top 20, they examine your records under a microscope, sniffing after money. Even the Stone Roses want 50% of 'Tunes Splits The Atom', and we only used half a bar of sample time." " Also, Alex Paterson of The Orb sampled 'Pacific State' on
4. 808 used an 808, on the White Room the credits mention an 808.
A commonly used Roland Drum Machine... Where 808 State got their name!

Very true! l8rs, Nick ;-)

Ah so that's what this software I downloaded does - ReBirth 808 - a basic drum machine. I thought an 808 was more than just a drum machine?!?

Hmm at least not Roland TR-808, this was "just" a drummachine (but a damn good one I would say :-)) The included step sequencer just rocks! IIRC rebirth has an 808, 909 and 2 x 303's Quite easy to use and a _lot_ of fun ;-) --- darrenforster99@ntlworld.com wrote: > > A commonly used Roland Drum Machine... Where 808

Easy ? Oh well... didn´t figure out how to use them properly. Might be designed like the real one, but their Reason software is far easier to use. On another note - due to a complete hdd crash (got to wait two weeks to get a replacement from Western Digital now) I lost my mails. Brendan, if you read this, please reply and send me the mails you wrote before, directly to thomas@klf.de. cy@ Thomas Touzimsky (who has no time to upload Live On Stage)
Just heard a really good song - so good I just had to download it. I found out it's details, Scooter - Logical Song. Whilst downloading it I looked on their website for details of it and noticed the cd and everything had a strange resemblence to The KLF - car parked (Chevy) in the middle of the cover (Timelords), and also from a distance the CD looks like it had a T (for Trancentral on it), when clicking and making it bigger I realised it was a speaker with a strange oval round it. After downloading it my thought of the association of this song with The KLF grew even stronger, right in the middle of the song they say "The K the L the F anthology" - same line used in 3AM Eternal. Also the whole song is very KLFish, sampling an old song - Supertramp - Logical Song, to make a superb track. So now I have a few questions Are the KLF anything to do with Scooter? Who is Scooter? Are Scooter anything to do with The KLF? Is Scooter, The KLF in disguise? Why are Scooter copying The KLF? Has Scooter been mentioned on this list before?
About two years back there were one or two list members who were Scooter enthusiasts and wrote to the list about Scooter frequently. As I recall, Scooter are KLF admirers, but have nothing to do with the KLF themselves. Dan Hutchins darrenforster99@ntlworld.com wrote:
