The cards _should_ be in bookshops, according to the press stories.

I got a pack last night at the Silent Protest launch - I'll post more details another time (cards are at home, I'm at work) There are only 1000 packs - 50 or so were given away last night and 10 will be posted to the names Bill picked at random. I'm not sure how many balloons were released, but doesn't returning one mean you get a pack of cards? I don't know how many will be left for the shops! -- "For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard P. Feynman

The achievement is that you are talking about it, in the first place. If you always wonder what the achievement would be of some effort to better the world, you'll be busy wondering about it only. Act. Act now. Do something about it now. Ofcourse, other people will complain about your personal interpretation of how to better the world, but in the end, you *will* be making a difference, and that's what will make you different than all the rest of them. So, if you want to make a difference, be it by shutting up for a while or whatever way you choose, at least make it known to whomever may be interested. If you don't, rest in piece. Oh well, time for me to go to bed, I guess. Being too deep-minded and stuff, for this time of night (04:26 AM over here). 'been 3 AM already! Bye all... Rheenen signing off...

Is there a specific day set for this when we can all 'protest' in silence? And does that mean we can't post to the list whilst we're being 'silent'? Andrew On Thursday 31 October 2002 12:51 pm, PVC@PositiveVoid.co.uk wrote:

Bill gets publicity in TimeOut, the NME, various online music rags. His vanity publishing house Penkiln-Burn gets to branch out into playing cards. What were you expecting, global nuclear disarmament? Someone did say at the talk that silence is usually an indication of acceptance or complicity. Bill agreed but said he wanted to see if he could turn that on its head on this occasion. He's also said in all the interviews that he knows that noone in a position to do anything about stopping the war will ever listen to him, so instead of talking to a brick wall he might as well be silent. Besides, your point is only valid if noone gives a shit. If you're silent for a day at work it will be noticed, and if you're protesting against the war you might be able to convince a few apathetic people that it's not a good idea and garner more support for the protest. Are you really surprised Bill's involved in a project that seems pointless? Where've you been all these years? A few years ago did you say "The K Foundation make a mockery of the Turner Prize, noone gives a shit and puffed-up overrated self-congratulatory art prizes continue" ? "K Cera Cera is released, noone gives a shit, war continues" Bill wants to make art, that will possibly make the world a better place. Call me a pinko leftist commie fag if you will, but I think anything that opposes war is a good thing, however ineffective. Betty Williams, 84, is one of the trailblazers for a broadband revolution in Britain's poorest estates. She leaves her flat in Aigburth every Wednesday and takes a bus that winds into the centre of Liverpool and drops her by the Liver building. Betty takes a short walk to the offices of the Liverpool Housing Action Trust where, on the first floor, she enters a small studio. There, she takes her role as camerawoman on an innovative internet television station. Betty Williams is 84. http://www.guardian.co.uk/internetnews/story/0,7369,822560,00.html "Tenantspin's audience might be small, but Sky and the BBC are interested in developing the idea. Fellow scouser Robert Kilroy-Silk is being courted as a host, and recent guests have included the writer Will Self, the actor Margi Clarke and Bill Drummond of the KLF, an 80s dance music outfit." http://www.youhavebeenwatched.org.uk/
Just thought I'd let ya all know that there's an article on Bill & his playing cards in this week's NME (the one that might prove difficult to find, given that the new one comes out Tuesday evening/Wednesday)! There's a piccy of him, and a fairly long(ish) article to accompany the picture. Also, in this month's Record Collector, there's an article on the 'Love Trance' 12" discussing whether it's genuine or not. The issue of RC is the one with Genesis on the front cover. l8rs, Nick ;-)

http://www.nme.com/artists/25330.htm http://www.nme.com/artists/photos/photo/20614.htm http://www.nme.com/news/103363.htm Former KLF man BILL DRUMMOND launched his "silent protest" against war in the Middle East at the MARX MEMORIAL LIBRARY in east LONDON last night (October 29). In a brief 30-minute talk in front of an invited audience of 50 competition winners, Drummond outlined his reason for staging the protest which involves staying silent for 24 hours and using a pack of 52 cards with slogans such as "Hello", "Yes", "No", "Tea", "Pint", "Where Is The Lavatory?", "You Look Great" and "Because It’s Stupid" to communicate. He said it was fuelled by a sense of silently standing by while the world slips into war in the aftermath of last year’s September 11 attacks. "It felt like we were gradually slipping into something, in the same way things happened in Germany in the 1930’s; you can see what’s happening but you can’t do anything about it. As an individual, you stand silently by while it all happens. "I thought that silence thing, maybe you can turn it on its head, and thought, ‘I know, I’ll be silent for a year’. Then realised of course I wouldn’t be able to do it. So I decided to try a day. And if 365 people all do a day, it’ll add up to a year." The talk was interrupted by Mark Manning, aka Zodiac Mindwarp, who heckled for the first ten minutes telling Drummond, who he wrote a book with about a trek to the North Pole, to shut up, before dropping a glass and storming out of the hall. Each of the audience members were given a pack of cards as they left, and a further event was held at The Foundry bar nearby, with 1,000 helium-filled balloons being released by artist Tracey Sanders-Wood, who attached copies of the cards to each balloon with a number for anyone finding it to call. Anyone who finds a balloon and contacts her will be sent a pack of silent protest cards. Only 1,000 packs have been produced, and when challenged at the balloon- release later in the evening over where the £6 cost per pack will be going, Drummond retorted: "I keep it! I have six kids to feed and clothe, and there is a warning on the side of the pack which says no money from the sale of these cards goes to charity." One person at the event asked how much it would cost to buy the six-foot black canvas with "Silence" painted on in white, underlined with yellow, which had acted as a backdrop during his talks, which Drummond said would set him back £2,000. Drummond, who began his second attempt at the 24-hour silence at midnight last night, told NME.COM that it was "incredibly difficult" to do, but he hoped that it would spread and become a wider protest. "I’m not trying to be Bob Geldof about it, I’m not somebody that’s born to attempt to lead. But I like the idea that this might trigger things off in other people." NME.COM's Alan Woodhouse is staging his own Silent Protest today. To find out how he fared, see next week’s issue of NME.
