RE: Credibility vs Success
The Oasis - Progidy thing was just a comparison, it does'nt mean that KLF and Manics are the same as them, it just means that all of those acts rose to the top of their particular game. I was just making it a nice clean cut bit of symbolism, at one time Oasis were the biggest band in the UKand therefore a symbol of success whereaes bands like Crass and the Fall are symbols of obscurity. Its like when people use Hitler or Charles Manson as a symbol of evil and racism. Charles isnt the only serial killer in the world but he is the most famous and therefore appears on more Tshirts (he was even on South Park and Celebrity Deathmatch). Its like when I said about the Jag, I know Jimmy doesnt drive a Jag but Jags and mansions are symbols of success and wealth. And yes I agree with you, these mdern day hip hoppers are billboards for all of this corporate, mass produced designer shite. Any way, the point all along is this: what value do you place on credibility and authenticity? To put it in a simple way: a certain amount of Manics fans are hardcore Richey, no matter what the band do now they will think its crap. If the Manics released their best album next year they wont buy it because they wont except them without Richey. I still don't get ze point. Do you put them in ze same pigeonhole? The KLF and Richey among Oasis and Prodigy? Did Jimmy drive Jags or what? Nah, he had old Ford cop cars. Even when The KLF were "sell out", they did it their way: their PRANKS got more expensive (trip to Jura, burning money), NOT their cars or wristwatches....they never wore YSL or DKNY or Nike like those "faithful" hiphoppers today... a Gyerek _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

I have been a huge fan of the hip-hop artist KRS-ONE ever since I first hear 'Criminal Minded' way back in 1987. Here is a rapper who has NEVER been involved in any music that could be considered pop-friendly. Yet he has had 10 albums (as BDP or Solo) and commands a lot of respect and hardcore fans. Many slag him off now as going soft. This is because his last two albums have become the Hip-Hop equivalent of Gospel/preaching music. He has grown older, now has children and is almost preaching the word of God. Yet many fans of his still consider KRS as something more realistic to life than the current crop of 'Hip-Hop' such as Jah-Rule ('baybeeey'), Nelleeeee and so forth. KRS kept his truthfulness and sincerity since day 1 and never produced any music purely to gain chart position or financial reward. I feel that Bill and Jimmy were almost the opposite of this. They so badly wanted chart success that they worked and worked at it until they got it. Hence the 'Stadium House' trilogy. WTIL: Pure Trance was an underground hit and brought their names to a new area of 'fans/interested people' that may not have heard of their previous work as the JAMMS ( I was one of that new crowd). Yet they continued. 3AM, Kylie Said - the proposed 'one single a week, for 5 weeks, called the Pure Trance Series' set. All are evidence of Drummond/Cauty trying desperately to have some chart success somewhere along the line. It all failed and until they did the 3rd incarnation of WTIL, the Live at Trancentral mix did they get chart success. How does this tie in with this thread? Is there any law that states you have to be authentic OR credable when it comes to music?? Can't you just do it cause you want to, and stop when you don't??? In My Humble Opinion (IMHO) The KLF were always out for pop success and never underground admiration. I don't know about the Manics, but I know that The KLF were all about making top selling records (wether they had any serious meaning or were pure crap), earning a fortune, and then laughing at the music biz for taking The KLF seriously... ...and then leaving. It would be the equivalent of Britney Spears announcing 'I've had fun making pop music, but I want to do something else now and so won't be making any more music - byee and thanks for the fish'.
