KLF - New digital video transfers
Hello List Seeing as MPEGs & VCDs are a hot topic again I thought I'd join in the fun. Through work I've got access to a digital video house. For a fee I was going to get my White Room VHS master tape ( from Appearing many years ago ) , Waiting and The Stadium House Trilogy digitally converted. I can get them in VCD & SVCD format. SVCD is like a mini DVD on a CDr but only 45 minutes long. Just long enough for TWR, W & TSHT! There is an option to get them DVDed but that's gonna cost me too much. I don't want to get into a Marek situation but I'll keep you updated. Anyone want to help start up a central MPEG archive? Cheers Andy andy@adlee.co.uk
Anyone want to help start up a central MPEG archive? I could provide you with very good copies (taken from original tape) - or the tape itself - of Fuck The Millennium and Kylie Said To Jason. Damn... got to send that letter to the press archive the BBC told me to ask for the TOTP appearances... cy@ Thomas
I have most of the MPEG's I know of.. Looking to get Rites of mu version 1 (not the MTV version) and the omnibus documentary..but i have all of the TOTP stuff.. I would really like to find a place to host it rather than cramming all that bandwidth down my DSL tho... --- Thomas Touzimsky <thomas@klf.de> wrote:

and believe me...if I had a DVD-R (and knew all dvd players could support it (at least mine can) I would be moving all my videos over to DVD with cool menus and the lot..most of the vids are in a bit lower res format, but I'm sure that I could do video out to VCR, and video in to a higher res format..without loosing too much.. then one wouldn't have to worry about those lovely "digital artifacts" that are so annoying.. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I can also capture from VCR and S-Video on to my comp in MPEG1,2,AVI to my comp with my video card. If someone can get the vids into the proper MPEG4 format, then it would just be a matter of getting the menus put together, and transferring a 4.7GB image to someone to produce... sounding more possible the more I want it.. Chris

When you say "is like a mini DVD", do you mean that it also uses VOB files like a DVD? If so, this would be the ideal format as it would mean somewhere down the line, as DVD writers get cheaper, etc., somebody could write a menu system and place them all on the one disc. The picture quality of DVD over VCD is very noticeable. You wouldn't want to take VCDs and encode them on to DVD.
There is an option to get them DVDed but that's gonna cost me too much.
Probably only because it requires the menu-system, etc. to be mastered as well. (And because they *can* charge a premium.) DVD-R discs are only 20 or 30 quid I thought. So if somebody was willing to put in the time themselves to create the menus, etc. at some point in the future, we could see "The KLF DVD Kollection" sooner than you think! Michael

Well, but that would require that we take the clips from original tapes rather than mpeg copies that are not the state-of-the-art quality (mostly to save space, though....) So, who out there got videos on their REAL tapes ? (except Stadium House... guess everyone should have that one...) cy@ Thomas

Be careful what you say there. DVD *is* MPEG. Just a better MPEG (and with less compression) than VCD uses. The K-Front CD-Rs that Marek was making were using quality comparable to VCD. If we encode now in SVCD format (assuming it is as good a DVD), and if we later master a DVD from these SVCD recordings, then we will have lost nothing.
So, who out there got videos on their REAL tapes ? (except Stadium House... guess everyone should have that one...)
Well, that's what Andy original suggested. He's got a White Room master tape, etc. which is great news. Problem is, some people sent their much coveted originals to Marek for him to encode and I think a few people had trouble getting them back! And Andy is obviously trying very hard to not have this turn into another situation like that. If he does eventually find the time to convert the tapes that he already has, and everybody is suitable impressed with the quality etc., *then* maybe the call can be put out for other people to submit their tapes to being digitally encoded. Let's not jump the gun here. Michael
If we encode now in SVCD format (assuming it is as good a DVD), and if we later master a DVD from these SVCD recordings, then we will have lost nothing. SVCD CAN be as good as DVD, but only holds 72 Minutes, (If you burn it right, maybe 76 or 78) where DVD could hold white room, waiting, Rites of Mu, all the music vids, and then all of the MP3's to boot..

I know - what I tried to point out is... whoever will encode all this stuff, he should use original tapes instead of the K-Front avi's and mpeg's, since they are sometimes not as clear as they would be on original VHS tape. Sorry for any misunderstandings. :-) So for those TOTP appearances... BBC told me I should ask their Archive, so I guess it is possible to get all those on a tape for personal use (they wouldn´t have given me the adress if it would be impossible anyway...). Got the adress here, got to find the time for a nice letter. Anyone can tell me what else the BBC aired involving Jimmy & Bill ? Except TOTP of course. cy@ Thomas

Sounds like, despite Marek's disappearance, listmembers still have good copies of most of the KLF material (I have a good copy of KSTJ but I think somebody else already mentioned that). Although some people are maybe going to think twice before eagerly sending off their videos this time...

It won't be impossible, but it may cost- and it may cost a lot- the kind of sums that are feasible for other TV companies but out of the range of most hobbyists who just missed a programme and would like to see it again. And if you don't have a business reason for asking (for example "I want to use a clip in the BBC-commissioned documentary I am making" or "I am going to pay you a large sum of money in order to be able to use your clip on ITV") then they may just laugh at you (in a very BBC-style way, so you can't hear them). And "personal reasons" will be a very transparent excuse, and "I want to bootleg it and rip off the BBC's property" is not advised either... And on a different note from another e-mail, cleaning up digital video prints of film footage to remove artifaces of the conversion is another thing that *can* be done, but you're not going to find a friendly professional production house who've got the set-up to do it but who'll spend hours of their time doing it for nothing, or indeed, less than a lot. Best would be to ask them... money problems *can* be solved.

At least I will mention that it is for non-profit reasons.
I thought the bbc were required to provide copies of their shows to the public (although probably only the british public) because they paid for them through the tv license or have i just made that up completely? On Fri, Feb 01, 2002 at 12:24:50PM +0100, Thomas Touzimsky wrote:

They sent me a tape of the Pyramid People documentary when I emailed them asking if they were likely to repeat it. Bablos.
Using the right software, it can be done from an average computer..It just takes HOURS upon HOURS (which I have done with some of the KLF material when I made my VCD's of waiting, and white room.

The menus are easy enough to do..it's just a matter of what format the DVD press place is willing to accept.. DVDit and some others make pretty nice menus, but unless you can have all of tha material right there, and also find a way to transport the 4.7GB iso image to the DVD press people, life gets hard again.. --- Thomas Touzimsky <thomas@klf.de> wrote:
